Title: Structural Urethane Adhesives
Post by: Roger & Susan in Home2 on December 16, 2015, 08:48:32 pm
I used this adhesive reinforcing my AC shrouds and in many other places as well.

Structural Urethane

You can use some of a tube, leave the mixing nozzle on.  It will cure in the nozzle which you can remove later.  Put on a new nozzle and continue using at a later date

Structural Urethane Applicator gun

6 Mixing Nozzles

The gun is expensive but I am finding many uses for the adhesive (now that I have it).

Thanks for the links! Bookmarking this topic as I will have use for this product in the near future. I was very impressed with the ease of application and the strength when Rance showed to me. I can envision many uses for this stuff!

The structural adhesive is pretty easy to use.  The mixing nozzle takes the parts a and b and mixes it in a corrugated like path. No other mixing needed.  It is fairly stiff but when it is warm it will sag. The adhesive I got has a seven minute working time.  That means that in seven minutes it is setting up in the mixing nozzle and everywhere you put it. In 45 minutes you can be sanding the excess off. They make faster setting adhesive, might be good for Rance but I wanted more time.

The holes in the plumbers strap give a lot of mechanical connection to the reinforcement.  Roughing up the plastic a bit helps too.  A piece of wax paper or plastic bag keeps your clamps clean and glue and strap as thin as they can be where the covers attach to the ac base.

I keep finding new places where this adhesive works well.  I sort of have to tomget my money out of it.  I am usually willing to spend money on good tools.  They will last a very long time and help you do the job as well as it can be done.

Thanks Roger, I used to make this stuff but my old company discontinued it after I retired. I still have the 1:1 application guns so I am really glad to find this product. It works great. But as Roger said it goes off really fast. As long as you keep it moving through the mixing tube it will keep flowing but if you let it sit for more than a few minutes you will probably have to put on another mixing tube.

I'm not sure what the shelf life of their product is but urethanes react to moisture so store it in a dry place, even in a good quality zip lock bag. Always remove the mixing tube when you are finished with the project or it can contaminate the rest of the cartridge.

I have had good luck just leaving the mixing nozzle on the glue tubes for more than a month or two at a time.  I don't see any way to reseal the tubes without having them set up at the tube ends after you remove the tube. They do make smaller tubes that you mix yourself.  These tubes and the applicator gun seem to waste almost nothing.

Good information Roger. Maybe they have new packaging that seals better and keeps the two components separated better than my old product. Our product package had a separator plug and screw on cap to use when you took off the mixing tube that sealed out moisture and improved shelf life.

Next time I open a new tube set I will look more closely at the cap.  I was concerned that if i took off the mixing nozzle and screwwed on the original cap that it would cure up right there and the remainder ould be lost.  Either way it seems to stay viable for some time.
