Title: Allison 4000 Series Sump Depth
Post by: Ed W on February 02, 2016, 02:14:24 pm
Is the sump on a 2003 U320 a 4 inch depth or a 2 inch depth? I am interested in this to determine the fill capacity and the proper change interval.  I do not have the coach yet (which would allow me to just measure it), but plan to pick it up in about 4 to 6 weeks.

Thank you,

  Hello Ed,
My 2003 U320 has the 4 inch sump,  and took 39 qts for a drain and refill.

Our 1995 U320 is in storage but from memory is looks as if it would be the 4-inch sump.

If I remember correctly think all the foretravel coaches had the 4 inch sump

Thank you for the replies. I think I should plan on getting 40 quarts of fluid.  The owner has been using Amsoil Torque Drive in the trans. It looks easy enough to change as a do-it-yourself project.  Just need to get a large enough drain pan.

Make sure to use a torque wrench (INCH-lb) on the filter housing bolts.  Steel into aluminum.

I just did a complete filter and fluid change ten days ago.  What I did is collect the fluid in a 5 gallon drain pan, then fill 5 gallon paint buckets with the fluid.  I did this until nothing came out again.  When done I actually had only 32 quarts of fluid although the manual says that it uses approx. 39 quarts.  Went for a test ride then checked on my keypad and all OK.  Now I have no idea where the other fluid is but it is what it is.  I do check samples at a testing lap every two years or sooner based on the lab results.  So not to steal the thread where is the other fluid that didn't come out?

Torque converter retains oil
