Title: Is a marine diesel OEM or after market in a 1991 ORED?
Post by: Tom Lang on February 10, 2016, 09:40:31 pm
I received this from someone needing answers. I would send him here, but as far as I know, they still aren't accepting new members.  Maybe someone can answer his question and I'll get the answer back to him

Thanks

Mr Lang
May I impose on you please.
I'm looking at buying a Foretravel Motor coach
It has a marine motor in it.
I was wondering if you could tell me was this factory or after market.
Here is what the ad says.
1991 Foretravel Grand Villa 36ft. Class A Diesel Pusher Powered by the Inline 6 Cylinder Turbo Charged Cummins 6CTA (8.3L) Marine Diesel Engine with the Allison Transmission with Only 83k Miles on the Oshkosh Chassis.
Thank You
Rick Maddox

Tom, I have seen a few ads with a similar description of the engine--being a "marine" engine.
Having been Chief Tool Engineer at Mercury Marine for nine years I doubt it is an actual marine engine. For example, a Mercury engine had water cooled exhaust manifolds, baffles in the oil pan, and in some cases a different fuel delivery system. I would think the Cummins 8.3 is not equipped with those in a motorhome.
All sorts of engines can and have been converted for use in marine environments but probably not converted back to land use as frequently.
Just as an aside, did you know that Mercury Marine (Fond du Lac, WI) manufactures the Corvette engine block and parts? At least they did back when I designed the tooling for them.

Tom,

Easy answer:  Have them call Cummins with the engine serial number: Cummins 800 343-7357

The big issue with a marine engine in a Motorhome will be the fuel system...  Boats have a unlimited cooling capacity. Take away the big radiator (the water the boat is sitting in).....  and the water-cooled exhaust,  you are heading for a big melt down without derating the fuel system.... A marine 6CTA had available horsepower ratings up to 480 Hp......  Todays little Cummins 8.3 (QSC8.3) is rated at 592 HP.

Cheers
