Title: Atwood Heatpump
Post by: stump on March 15, 2016, 05:12:54 pm
I am needing to replace my front A/C unit in my 91 GV and have decided after a lot of research to replace it with the Atwood Heatpump. I read in the search threads a few of you are using them, Are you still happy with the decision to use them after having them for awhile?

My two 15k btu heat pumps are so quiet per my wife and every guest that has heard them.  They have excellent operating modes and far above the competition internal structure.  I would not go back to Dometic or Coleman A/Cs.

My Semi-retired RV fix-it friend has them in his Gran Villa and recommends them too.

Thank you Kemah John for introducing me to the Atwoods.

If you install them, you will be well pleased with your choice.

I am very happy with my Atwood Air Command heat pumps, except:

We are currently on the way to FMCA Reunion (big rally) in Perry, GA, and are over-nighting at Lake Pines in Midland, GA. The rear unit, which we very seldom use, has developed a fan-hitting-something kinda noise. Not real loud, just aggravating, because it has always been so quiet. Turned it off and the noise went away.  :o

Will see if Atwood has a booth and find out what my options are.

For the record, we almost never use it because the front unit cools off this 40' Foretravel without a problem. Knowing what I know now, I would seriously consider only getting the front unit. You certainly don't need a second 15 K heat pump. (IIRC, Atwood doesn't sell a heat pump unit that is smaller, at least a ducted one.)

I am wanting to replace our noisy Duo Therm front unit as well and was considering a new Penguin II. If the Atwoods are that much quieter I would definetly consider changing.
Any input appreciated.

Our Atwood Air Command has 10,000 miles on it since we (MOT)  installed it last spring. I'd do it all over again, however, the unit's operating characteristics are different from the Dometic we replaced.

The unit runs almost constantly, with few momentary pauses as it cycles. So, there is a constant background sound when the unit is heating or cooling. The pauses are noticeable at first. We no longer hear them.

The remote control failed quickly. That's a minor deal for me. The controls are simple, clear and easy to use. I wish the control pad was backlit for use in the dark.

I had planned to replace the rear unit, too--but this one seems to warm and cool our coach pretty darned well.

My 2 Atwood air command 15000 ducted heat pump air conditioners that I installed about a year ago are doing great. Quiet and when we arrived at Chadron, Nb last year the temp was 104 dg and we only had 30 amps of power at campground. one unit keep coach confortable using front unit in day time and rear unit at night. Separate thermostats work great would be better if backlighted however remote makes it easy.
