Title: propane fitting for BBQ
Post by: gootie on April 07, 2016, 04:52:07 pm
What fitting do I need for hooking my 12 foot hose to coach tank

I had the same problem. I drove the coach to my local propane dealer, then showed them the fitting on the tank and my hose. Out of there in less than 20 minutes and had comfortable feeling of having the right connectors. Cost was less than $8

Make sure you have proper regulator that is specific to your grill.

Grill has a regulator . I have never seen this connection on a propane tank. Was it intended for hooking to a bulk tank for winter use?

Do you have the details on the fitting they sold you?

I just installed an L fitting and ball valve in the plugged port on my LP regulator so that I could connect my grill to a regulated gas flow and have a shut-off.

The PO of my rig had crudely cut the stainless mesh in one of the vent holes in the bay floor to provide an exit for the grill hose.
I removed the rest of the mesh , sealed all around the small gap that was left and used a white 50amp cord hatch cover to fill the vent hole.  My BBQ grill hose is the same diameter as a 50 amp cord so it fills the small door opening in the larger cover when the grill is hooked up.  I also drilled a number of symmetrically balanced holes in the cover to provide some venting, as opposed to the piece of duct tape the PO put over the vent hole when it wasn't in use.

While I was remodeling the bay I also made a mounting base for my fire extinguisher using a 4" PVC adapter with a threaded end cap screwed to the floor.  The extinguisher was a tight fit at first but after a couple of minutes with a sandpaper flap wheel on the inside of the PVC I was able to get a looser fit.

I bought this hose at a RV store which had one end which would fit that fitting, I then bought a fitting for the other end to fit my grill as though you were screwing it onto a gas bottle.

Sorry, David, but I bought mine about five years ago. All I have are the fittings and the hose I had them make up for me. Total cost at the time--for a 25' hose with ends was $87 plus tax.

Camco makes a locking LP gas quick disconnect.

Amazon.com: Camco 59853 Propane Quick Connect Kit - Valve & Full Flow Plug:... (http://amazon.com/Camco-59853-Propane-Quick-Connect/dp/B007HG7TFO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage)

I put it after the regulator on the coach tank so the regulator that came on the fire pit we have is not needed. I have two ten foot hoses so when they are connected together (with quick disconnects) the fire pit can be further away if I want it to be,

I went to an LP gas place and got the hoses I needed.  The gas fittings look like air hose fittings but are different.

The quick disconnect locks the connection if the black lever is in the open position.

I have come to the conclusion that the connection I have was intended for connecting an external tank as a means to provide extra supply volume. This would be used during colder weather when hunkered down for extended periods of time. My coach has 2 propane furnaces. It appears that I will need to visit a propane supply shop to have a different connector for use with the traditional hose to grill setup.

Don't know if this will help, but the LP-gas system is high-pressure from the tank to the regulator and low-pressure after the regulator. Different hoses and quick-connect fittings are required for the different sides of the system. I've found useful information and products at the following sites:

Propane Parts, Splitters, Hoses, Connectors (http://www.propaneproducts.com/catalog/parts-fittings-hoses-35-1.html)

Brass Fittings and Orifices, Propane Tank Fittings, Propane Control Valves,... (http://gashosesandregulators.com/Brass-Fittings/40)

Roger, your setup is exactly as mine and the shut off valve I teed into the "drop" on the manifold. This gives me a place to periodically drain any oil that builds up in lines. I have 20' of hose too and it is nice to get the BBQ or firepit well away from coach.
Worked great for many years so far. I too took off the regulators on both items.

Thanks Roger and John, very helpful.  Probably will convert from carrying tank just for grill or fire pit.  Have avoided using coach supply due to safety concern.  Thanks again,

Mike

Good to hear from y'all. I am taking coach to local truck repair place for oil/filter and chassis next week. On the way home is  a propane dealer where I hope to get appropriate connection for BBQ grill. The 40gal tank in my non acquahot  coach will be great for that near daily cookout as we travel west this summer.

Here is a picture of my gas line connection.  I guess I need to clean a bit after sitting all winter.
