Title: Engine Coolant
Post by: Roland Begin on May 04, 2016, 12:01:17 pm
I just had my SCA based coolant changed over to OAT based coolant. The coolant used was ES Compleat Oat. The dealer installed a Fleetgard wf 2073 water filter. Am I incorrect in believing that that filter is for an SCA based coolant? The Cummins dealer insists that it is compatible with both SCA and OAT based coolants. Just doesn't ring right with me. Sent Brett Wolfe a PM as I am really nervous about this. Incuding the fact that my coolant is about one gallon low. Any ideas anyone?

The documentation I have indicated that it's the wrong filter (it contains the additive). They should have used a "blank" filter, such as a WF2084.

Trying to contact the dealer now as I have no clue what they put in there. As well as the fact that they did not fill the system as it is a gallon low. From what I can deduce from the receipt is that they used SCA based extended life coolant when I specified OAT based coolant and they insisted that is what they put in.. Waiting for a return call, will give them a while before I "visit".

Being a CAT man, I'm not allowed to comment. However, over the years, I've sure heard that " it's all the same" line. Let us know the outcome.

Here is the link to your coolant (assume what is in there): ES Compleatâ„¢ OAT (http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/html/en/products/cooling/coolant/es_compleat/oat.html)

And, indeed a filter BLANK is used.  The PN they used contains 8 units of DCA.

I am not a chemist-- do not know the negative in what they did.  I would contact Cummins Filtration for their take on this.

Went back to the dealer and asked exactly what did they put into my cooling system. They did not put OAT based coolant as requested as it was a special order for them. No call for it in 18 months. With the volume of fleet trucks here that surprises me. Was a bit upset as they led me to believe they were putting in what I asked for.  Guess I'll wait another year to switch to OAT, probably have to find a place where I can do it myself.

Roland,

There is nothing wrong with "low silicate for diesel with added SCA coolant".

Yes, annually you have to test for SCA concentration and replenish if needed.  Also check freeze point and pH.

But with that annual "maintenance", is should test just fine for 3-4 years if they did a good job of flushing out all the old coolant.

Said another way, I would not change it next year!
