Title: Replacing the Rear Camera
Post by: TulsaTrent on May 10, 2016, 11:00:51 am
Okay, guys and gals:

For those of you who have replaced or done work on your rear camera, how did you remove that slotted plate?

The camera is mounted to it, but my arms are not long enough to reach the nuts on the edges of the plate. Did you make another hole (or two) to reach those nuts?

Any suggestions are greatfully appreciated!

Thanks,

Trent

Replaced the Javelina back up camera with a Amazon ordered wireless setup a few months ago and so far very pleased with the performance.  Mounted the monitor with velcro on the class protective Javelina screen and went to 12V thru the hole left by the up down camera toggle switch.

Mounted the camera with a polished aluminum shroud  just below the old lens screen, and then painted the old lens screen to match the coach.

I reached in thru the access hole with a socket on a ratchet to back off the nuts. Then I went to the outside and removed the plate.
Cut the camera box to get old camera out.
Took glass cutting drill and drilled thru the glass to get the new camera mounted, then when I had it in took silicone to seal and hold the camera in place.

Right arm socket and ratchet for the left side, left arm socket and ratchet for the right side.

T-man, on a 2003 if OEM the "shield surround" around the camera is held in by 2 wing nuts accessible from inside the coach at the top of the rear cap after you remove the cabinet back (above the bed in our floorplan).

Here's my post from last year.  I had to cut a bigger hole.

I did something a bit different for the back up camera. Probably more trouble than most would want to take on, but I have been happy with the result. There are probably more pictures posted of mine in other's threads, but here is one with some detail. It was a project that also involved installing a Mac Mini in the dash and a monitor capable of taking HDMI 1080p or 720p signals as well as a second digital input. As I posted before, there is an HDMI Matrix switcher and a second monitor overhead. The camera is an outdoor surveillance camera with 1080p resolution and a serial digital interface (SDI). It runs through an SDI to HDMI converter (lossless digital format conversion) and then to the HDMI switcher. I may do some changes with the setup since I got a much better overhead monitor than the one I originally installed that is higher native resolution and is much brighter and has HDMI, SDI, Component Video (all native HD formats). Right now, I am just running the HDMI from the switcher which works well and allows me to have the computer VMSPC as well as the back up camera display either overhead or in the dash or both.
Here is a link to one of the threads which also contains a link to my first prototype installation;
