Finally got most of the weight off front right and "finally" got the lug nuts off(wheel shifted outward a bit, so, am guessing we need to go up a bit more when putting it back on? I see no sight glass. All that is there is a hard steel(?) cover resembling a dirt cover over the bearing of an auto. This cover is bolted on.
Does this coach NOT have wet hubs? Done for today. Will attack it again tomorrow. Any and all advise will be appreciated.
Jim
ps. How did we manage so many millions of miles when we had to remove and grease bearings by hand??
Can you post a pic of what you see?
I'm not that literate as yet. It looks just like the ones over the bearings on the front wheel of the old autos - just bolted on instead of knock off. Four bolts spaced evenly around the circle. Bolted to the wheel - not to a spindle.

My 88 had sight covers with a plug that you could see the oil leveL... LOST ONE RAD 100 miles with a cork in the hole.. freightliner truck stop... got a new plug
Me too....that is how my '89 is. Sorry wish I could help
Jim,
I didn't realize that any Grand Villa with an Oskosh chassis came with the Cummins 8.3. I thought all U-240's had the CAT 250 hp engine. Learn something new everyday.
Some came with packed wheel bearings not all had the wet hubs
My '89 has the packed wheel bearings. Also instructions in my chassis manual.
My 91 GV has the wet hubs. I had a leaky plug once and I used a thermos bottle adjustable cork until I could get a real plug. Actually, I think that the thermos bottle plug was better than the original equip't plug. Have a great day ---- Fritz
Several variants to the Grand Villas:
Oskhosh (ORED) with frame rail chassis
225/240 Torsilastic suspension Unihomes
280/300 8 outboard air bag suspension Unihomes
And, through the years, ORED's came with DD 8.2 liter 4 strokes, Caterpillar 3208 or Cummins C engine.
Some spring chassis Oshkosh had packed wheel bearings as red tractor mentioned
Thanks everyone - we took the dust cover off and it has packed bearing(plenty grease). Gonna put things back together and go to the dam camp ground Sunday(Dale Hollow Dam Campground) IF it don't snow! Will be my first over nite....
Jim
Had a 93 Oshkosh with springs and front greased brgs. Mine had the 5.9 Cummins. Nice coach but I wanted all the newer items and air.
