Title: New Ignition Solenoid Update
Post by: prfleming on June 22, 2016, 07:05:07 pm
I decided to start a new thread with an update:

My problem was the engine temperature gauge rising 10 degrees when switching the dash fan on to high - due to a voltage drop. I measured the voltage drop across my 25 year old solenoid:

0.5 volts with fan on high - not good...

The new solenoid is in and here is the reading:

0.005 volts with fan on high - big improvement

Now the temp gauge doesn't budge when running the fan. Also, the new solenoid makes a much more noticeable "Clunk" when it closes.

Solenoid I used - has silver tungsten carbide contacts:

Cole Hersee Continuous Duty 200 Amp Solenoid (https://www.amazon.com/Cole-Hersee-24213-Continuous-Solenoid/dp/B005K2429I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466636348&sr=8-1&keywords=cole+hersee)

Note that I grounded one of the small terminals. The OEM solenoid just had one small terminal, the coil is connected to ground internally.

Mine (1991) is under the flip up dash, right behind all the dash gauges. Maybe someone with a coach near yours will chime in...

Rob yours will be like mine behind the panel in front of passenger and at the bottom centre on wiring panel. They are black square  looking and will have Bosch on it. Much bigger than a relay. There should be 2 of them together.
