I just bought a 1987 Grand Villa today and drove it home without issue - then, of course, an hour later the roof AC went out. The generator runs, but no charging on the meter and now AC. Found a half melted IOTA automatic transfer which with fried wires. I just ordered a new but am curious as to what would have caused this. Any ideas?
Edited topic title to be more descriptive - Michelle
Melted wired in the ATS are most frequently caused by a loose connection.
Loose connection= resistance= heat= degraded wires= more resistance= more heat.
The points are often overheated (pitted) by transferring under high amp loads.
Thanks - replacing the ATS this week.
Congrats - where did find a 87 gv?
Craigslist - where else? The interior is excellent, drive train good, and the body is solid. I'm starting to piece back together parts of the electrical system which have not been cared for properly.
