Title: Girard awning
Post by: Caflashbob on August 13, 2016, 12:21:15 pm
I may have access to a girard 18' power main awning with the wind sensor and remote new in box.  Leftover oem stuff in my preferred linen color.

Our coach has a 21' on it now.  Material scraped from the mid door swinging open under it.

Anyone done this?  Any suggestions?

May or may not have matching window awnings.

Bob,

I have a very large Girard awning. Although mine is not a mid-entry, the top of the door is DEFINITELY a problem with the awning extended. This includes having the door open (fully) while extending the awning.

I do not know if there is an adjustment for the slope of the awning. Again, mine is very large, but when it is fully extended, there is no way the door can be opened very wide without scraping the awning fabric. No disasters yet, but it could easily happen, especially as our memories stop working as good.

Good luck,

Trent

Not sure which one my buddy has but most of theirs say the pitch is adjustable.  Or maybe I need to roof mount it?

The zip Dee has the head savers on it now and when it's up and slid up on the head savers it does clear my mid door.

Good luck,

Trent

Mine is side mounted, OEM, and clears the door.

Bob,

What is a head saver?

Thanks,

Trent

Our coach has vertical sliding lower awning arm mounts that move up the lower mount

Bob, we have a 40' mid entry and Girard awning.

The awning will contact the open door while the awning is in process of extending or retracting.

Once the awning is extended there is no contact. We can open and close the door or leave it open with no problems.

We just need to remember to close the door when extending or retracting.

Roof mount or conventional mounting? Buddy has 18' available.  Is that long enough?

Thanks.  I see how now.

Do any of you have a preference of 12volt or 110?

Mine is 110. If I had it to over and could do 12 v I would go that way. Works off inverter when not plugged in or running genny. If always plugged in 110 fine At times I have thrown a rag over anerometor to keep awning out in what I thought was light winds Have not looked into adjusting. Was told by MOT mine could not be adjusted for wind speed

Buddy says this one has the Candace motion sensor, remote and led lights

More worried about the 18' versus the 21' we have now

Mine is 120 volt, also runs off inverter. Wind speed is adjustable. Should be a white plastic box [about size of cigar box]
somewhere in the coach. Mine has "somfy" on the cover. Inside is either dip switches or a adjustable pot for setting the wind speed that causes the awning to retract. I would not set it much above 20-22 mph. I tried my at 22-24 and almost lost the awning.

I have heard the motion sensor is much better that the wind sensor, a bonus is you do not have to worry about branches
taking off the wind sensor.

 Conventional mount, Bob.

I don't remember the actual length. It's probably 21'. I don't think I would miss 1 1/2 feet on each end.

Thanks.  The girard was a secondary thought versus polishing out the zip dees and replacing the fabric.

My guru buddy who has thirty years Rv service experience heavily recommended keeping the zip dees.

His comment was because of our dry camp and weather use areas.

Said the zip dees were better at wind and rain stuff.

Last trip I did tip the zip Dee for water to run off.

No drain holes in the girard that I have seen.

Probably just replace the fabrics with linen

Concur. Girard way more convenient. Zip Dee will take rain and wind. Set it up and leave it out vs in and out with Girard

But, make sure you tip the Zipdee. We lost ours @ Panama Beach 2 years ago..broke in half..that was a pain in the #$&%% to get it rolled up so we could travel.

We were saying goodbye to some rookies with a fresh OM coach. As they turned the corner, I noticed their big awning coming out, Yikes!  It caught the light standard and ripped it off. I'm sure it was the DW that said, "now you've done it." I'm not a believer in misery loving company (except Airstreams and Foretravels) so I watched them get the awning back up, with some damage, and left quickly. Must have been a quiet trip to find a service outlet.  :-[
