Title: What's the best 'wireless' rear camera system ?
Post by: Johnnie & Susan Laird on August 14, 2016, 07:15:42 pm
As usual, I've wore the internet out and am more confussed than ever.

1. Easy installation. ( wireless ) ?
2. Large monitor. ( color )
3. Money is an object.
4. Will still leave the old system with tank monitors.

1994 - U225 - 36'
Our original rear camera  still works, but part time.

Thanks for your help...........~Johnnie~

No need to go wireless.

Contact Tim at rvcams.  They have adapters so you can use the existing wiring with a new camera and/or monitor.

You can use the Audit information on a new monitor as long as it has the proper "straight/reverse" choice.

Best and most reliable to stick with wired. It is pretty easy to use existing wire or as I did just run new wire down the wall/ceiling channel and it was not hard to do.  RV Cams or Tadi Brothers are good sources.  It is amazing how much better the new cameras and monitors are than the old b/w one was.

We went wireless.  I did the installation in Sept of 2014, and the end result has been a good, reliable system that does everything we require.  The road to get to that point was a little rough.  I bought my equipment from Tadi Brothers, but I cannot recommend them.  Any tech specs from my install are probably dated, but you may be interested in the "process" of going wireless.  The two threads linked below cover all the details.

I did Tadi Bros wired. Works well. Customer service was good. Gave me discounts and free 2 day shipping. Price about the same. Talk to both places.

If you go wireless, I'd be prepared to go to the wire in case it doesn't work out for you.  I tried wireless but it did not do well for me.

Make sure the monitor has mirror option or the tank readouts from the Audit will be reversed.

Is there a direct replacement for our dash monitors?  A backup camera/monitor is simple, but one that has all the inputs (temps,, compass, tank levels, etc) is what I need.  Has anyone found one?

I couldn't find a replacement offering all of the functions. The Javalina in my coach was dead when I bought it. The PO had already replaced the monitor and added a 3 camera system.  We added a couple of SeeLevel tank monitors, one in the bathroom and one in the wet bay.

The dash monitor is just that, with two video inputs.  One from the camera, one from the Audit/Javalina computer.  You could replace the monitor with another one with multiple inputs as long as the computer is still functioning.

There isn't currently a simple replacement for the Audit/Javalina that offers all functions, which is why most folks are going with SeeLevel tank monitoring when the computer fails.  On a major upgrade one might look at Silverleaf's Total Coach HMS (house monitoring system), but it's probably cost-prohibitive (and possibly overkill) for most retrofits.

I found it worked out very well when I replaced the original inoperative rear camera.  All of the Audit functions on our coach were still working fine, so I just continued to use the in-dash CRT to display that data, and the new overhead wireless monitor for the rear-view display.  Since there is no longer a camera feed, if I leave the original 3-way function selector switch in the middle position, it clears the CRT screen to avoid "burning in" the image.  Works for us!

Hi Roger,

Is the wall channel you are referring to for the camera cable run the same as the D channel Brett referenced a while back?  I have a 99 u320 and in the AV console above the driver, I pulled the cap for the air horn air line access and can see part of the aluminum channel.  Did you access from the side of the channel or the bottom please?  Brett had mentioned that there were access points in the upper cabinets but do not see one in the back.  Did you just drill a new opening in the back of the coach?

Any insight or advice will be appreciated - thanks!
