Title: leaking air valve
Post by: prevostart on August 26, 2016, 03:28:19 pm
my wet tank in rear of coach I found a air leak in this valve, It's not the remote drain it's some kind of spring valve, what is this and what does it do?

It is some kind of check valve if you touch or turn it comes out hard

Did you try pulling or turning the knurled knob?  If doing so releases air from the tank, then it's probably some kind of safety pressure relief valve.  Doesn't look like the one on our wet tank, however.

Drain your air tank and pull the valve see if there is a part number. A google search would tell you what it is.

Looks like somebody replaced a relief valve with a drain valve because thats all they had.Get a relief valve at a parts store and
install it.

On second thought,my 96 has the drain valve on that tank but the drain is routed from the tank to a valve near the door by the
sewer drains. You can drain it easily, and the decal near the drain says to drain daily.

Continued Google search turned up a Haldex pressure relief valve that looks exactly like Art's photo.  The one you want is 150 psi rating in whatever pipe thread fits the tapped hole.

Pressure Relief Valves - Haldex product category (http://www.haldex.com/en/na/valves/pressure-relief-valves/pressure-relief-valves/)

Is the threads 1/2 inch? if so 08 could be thread size.. Chucks post will get you the replacement no mater what the thread size is.

If it's a relief valve as it appears to be, it probably says 80 instead of 08, and it is working just as IT was designed to do, the system just wasn't designed for IT !

The relief valve on our wet tank is a Bendix ST-3.  That is why I didn't recognize the valve in Art's photos.  I prefer the design of the ST-3, because the spring, ball and seat are outside the tank.  I think there is less chance of corrosion, or trash obstructing the valve with the external placement of the moving parts.

Either type valve will work just fine.  Just need to be sure it opens at 150 psi.

If so it would have been blowing off all the time.

Looks exactly like the 150 PSI relief valve on our wet tank. Napa should be able to source it easily.

Yup, "pop off" valve, ours is the "bobble head" style with internal spring... also leaks a bit, will replace in a day or two.
