Tent RV show dates are January 21st through 29th 2017.

See y'all there

Bill you gotta be there. As they said " its not the same without you".

Been trying to get there since I acquired the '69 Dodge 270,(20 + years ago) and then the '78 Travco 320. The kids have them now and I have the '92 Grand Villa. My Nephew has been staying in it for a while but he now has his own pull behind. When he moves out in a week or so, I will start running the new one local. If it holds up, I am goin' to th' Q this year!!

Kent- you know that when DW's family is having a big event and she says we are going, it means we are going.
It also happens to be the exact same time, other end of the country ( thats where we will leave the coach ), actually in the Cayman Islands.  It's rough but we must do what we have to do.

I'm sure Peggy can explain it if you are not sure..........lol

...here's an important question, it's a wide open space-where is it?
If you will read this thread from the beginning, you will find some info on the location, like (for instance) this:

"Lemon" Gathering secret location: N33 34.965 W114 13.874  (copy and paste into Google or Bing maps satellite view)

Lately, I've been using Bing maps rather than Google maps - I find it works just as well, and is often more informative.  ^.^d

Ok  members---how many are going to bring a  " Off Road "  machine to go play in the near by mountains  ,old mines  the " Oh shit trail"  and  some working claims . How about the ride thru the mountains all the way to California . ??  This is a great area to explore , check out some interesting stuff  . I don't know the area well , but good enough to get around pretty good . Been doing this for  seven years and look forward  to it  each year . I do the tent thing and enjoy bit , but the main thing is meeting the Foretravel folks that are here for the first time and visiting the folks I have come to know over the years .      Brad  Metzger

If I had a pit, I would wait for John to get here to help me rebuild the HWH six packs ::) Not certain yet how long we will be hanging out at the Lemon Rally or whether we might be going somewhere else right after, but I anticipate we will be there at least for a bit while the big tent is up.

Bing maps tells me the "mailing address" for the spot where you turn off the pavement onto the dirt is:

30623 53rd St, Quartzsite, AZ 85344

We've been there several times, but I never saw the mailbox...  Some SOB musta knocked it over when they cut the turn too tight.

The kids used to come up and say they really wanted to do something. Then when it was
a bigger deal to them they would say they really, really wanted to do something. Then when
it was extra special it would be a big hardy, I want to really, really, really want to do this or
that. Well I really x3 want to go to Quartzite this year but it does not look like it is in the cards
for me. I do not have the old coach to where I really feel comfortable making a long trip in it, yet.
I hope everyone there has a really x3  time this year and I look forward to seeing all of you
next year.

It is a five full five day event for me , several tanks of fuel . Brother Dave was always going to do it , keep putting it off . I hear some of that same talk here . We have firmed up our plans.  We will arrive at Q on Tuesday, the 17th.  We are hoping to find a nice East-facing parking spot on the North side of the "street", so we can finally try tilting our solar panels and see what they can really do under ideal conditions.  Time to play with the toys!

Looking forward to seeing all our Forum friends, new and old!

Chuck I have 2 420 watt panels, so far we have not needed to tilt them, batteries are full by noon. We don't pay attention to how much power we consume. I may tilt them to see what they will do, I have seen 55 amps.

We have a stop in Agaunga Calif before Q and HOPE to leave for south in the morning but we had another dump of snow last night so did a quick check of traffic cams in Wash' and Oregon and looks not too bad from around 80 miles south of us but will now change routes as 97 south thru Oregon looks not nice. Will head west on I 84 to before Portland then south I 5. Siskiyou's look fine and that is usually a bad spot as very high Pass and steep. Looks like we have added a bunch of miles to route but better safe. First problem is getting out of our drive and up the hill(very steep and no run up to build momentum) to main Rd. Will hook up Tracker after that (if we make it)

John,

Had some friends we used to run with. They had an old converted Blue Bird Bus that
he removed the 460 gas and put in a pretty worn 3208 Cat. It was not very fleet footed.
They pulled a Jeep CJ7 and the son rode in it to play his music. One day going up Rabbit
Ears Pass in Colorado I saw the son crank the Jeep and start pushing.I laughed all the way
to the top then pulled over and waited on them. I asked them if I needed to keep a chain
handy? They said, o no this usually works. Have always wondered how they handled the
time(s) it didn't.

Have a safe trip down and I hope everyone has a super good time in Q,

Carter

What is the soil like at camp Foretravel? At Phoenix raceway one year there was rain, not a lot of rain, and the ground turned to slime and motorhomes were spinning tires trying to get out of there. We waited on more day and got out but, everything was covered in mud, rugs, leveling blocks and shoes.

We'll be there about the 15th.

Craneman:  Ground where we park is generally like concrete, although if you're way off in the bushes or parked in a wash (not recommended...), it can get a little soft in places.
No mud problems, and if it rains, the ground is dry pretty quickly.

Let it get it out of it's system now, so it will be dry in a couple weeks.  The long range forecast for most of January looks pretty good, with mild temps and only a occasional shower.  Knock on wood...

Thin-Lite Giveaway!

Since we went 100% LED inside our coach, and it appears none of my "homemade" lights are going to burst into flame, I have some "pull-out" fluorescent fixtures to give away.  I don't really want to hassle with packing these things in boxes and shipping them.  BUT, if you are coming to Q and could use them, I'll be happy to bring them with us.  Even if you just need them for parts - I don't care what you do with them - just want them out of my garage.  They were all working when removed, and are complete, except as noted.  (bulbs may or may not be good)

Here's what I've got:

5 "short" units, Model 8W 171-2.  Size: 2.25" x 17.5".  Uses one F8T5 fluorescent tube.

1 "medium" unit, Model 16W 172-11.  Size: 2.25" x 29.5".  Uses two F8T5 fluorescent tubes.

5 "long" units, Model 26W 174-1.  Size: 2.25" x 47.5".  Uses two F13T5 fluorescent tubes.  (One lens missing - cracked in half when I removed it)

I also have a small box of un-needed fluorescent tubes (various sizes) that I will give away at Q - first come, first served.

Let me know before Jan. 15 (our departure date) if you have any interest.

All generous participants are welcome!  Bring your old "stuff" and throw it in the pile!

When I remove some item from my coach, I try to think if it would be of use to other owners.  Especially if it is something unique to Foretravel, or a part from a outside supplier that is no longer in production.  In some cases, even if another owner could use the item, getting it to them would be a big (expensive) hassle.  So, when we have a large Foretravel gathering like Q, I think it is the perfect time to redistribute the wealth.  If any other Q attendees have treasures they would like to donate to the cause, I encourage them to do so!

By the way, my old Thin-Lites are now all spoken for.  Those who snooze - lose.

He called just now to say they had 16" of snow overnight but right now the sun is shining and he is currently digging a path ( 40' long so far!)for his RV ready for the ok to proceed, the trucks are moving with chains but nothing much else.

We got about 4 inches of rain with a ton of snow above us in N.Cal in the last day. John's travel window will be only open until Friday night with non-stop rain/snow for at least a week after that. Both the I-5 Grapevine and 58 to Mojave may be marginal after Friday.

well we are out of that mess and unconventional methods to say the least. Got up at 6 am and dozens of cars around me with people sleeping all night. Cleaned the Tracker off and helped some people out of it and got them on their way. Amazing how something like this gets all the people together and help each. By noon I was about done but decided to drive to Yreka and see what road was like as Highways said no one moves. Well they had the I 5 clear to pavement but still making the poor truckers put chains on. I got hold of the lady with authority that had the road closed and told her what they must have known already that it was now clear and all of a suddun now it is ok to get one it!!!!
An hour later I had slid the coach down a steep bank and needed to tie the hitch to a truck to pull it over one way while I reversed it down, we made it work. Ruth drove the car behind me and it all worked great. We are now parked in a TA truck stop 110 miles N of Sacremento and it is heaven.
No more snow and warm.
it was a very interesting day and night but one I do not want to do again.
We will see what the Grapevine does but so far FT did good and no damages.
I have pics but cannot send them as wifi is not good enough for it right now.

Consider going through Bakersfield, Palmdale, and meet up with the 15... no need to do the Grapevine unless you want to! According to my navigator, from Bakersfield take the 58 east to the 14 south which becomes the 138 and meets up with the 15. We took that route coming back from Canada a couple years ago. Avoiding the 5 in So Cal is a matter of policy for us wherever possible.

The 138 is a 2 lane road with lots of dips. Be carful, lots of accidents on that road. When we leave for Vegas from here we drive 30 miles out of our way to avoid it. The 58 to Barstow still has some 2 lanes on it but is safer.

John, the easiest way to get to our place is to go straight down the 15/215 to Temecula Parkway (which is the 79 S) and then stay on that till you get to the turnoff to JH. No need to go through Hemet and the windy R3 unless you happen to come at a time when there is too much traffic on the freeway...

My recollection of that route is that it was a pleasant drive through scenic high desert countryside. We have been down many twisty two lane roads, some of which were challenging to say the least. This particular route was only memorable for the scenery and because it goes through the area which we used to visit my grandma when I was a wee lad... lots of memories. Be that as it may, I happen enjoy driving the Foretravel on meandering country two lanes (though I prefer meandering country four lanes!) because I always get a sense of satisfaction at just how well our coach handles the curves with its 8 air spring chassis. Stays nice and flat! Now I don't race through them, preferring to enjoy the drive. The curves keep me focused, planning ahead, mixing brakes and retarder. But that is the wonder of our obsession, we all get choose the routes that suits us.

For my sanity, avoiding the 5 in So Cal has become my mantra. I have wasted too many hours in traffic since I first started driving at 16. I grew up in a little town that is only about 2 miles east of the 5, and when taking care of my parents during their last couple of years of independent living, I drove the 5 between San Diego and my childhood home about 300 times. I don't care if I never go that route again! Of course, John wouldn't be going that far south... but the 5 is the 5!

yes, as Don said we made it and frankly I do not want to do that kind of trip ever again in the coach. counting Wash state we had 5 stops for chain up (non of which we followed as we had none) There was literally 1000s of trucks and cars stuck on the I 5 south of Oregon Border for 50 miles. It was insane. The coach did fine except for the time  stuck in snow and sliding into guard railing. Needed a F250 4x4 tied to my hitch and pulling at 90 deg to get me back on the road, but it worked. Lots of fun !!!  tracker worked hard pulling cars out of mess.
Now to fix H W propane heater as flame is not right. Nice to have down time to clean up coach and do stuff instead of battling the elementss for sure.
Should be at Q on either 15 or 16th.

I made another for Trent to match his 295 so that one has gone. These are all alum'n not like the cheapies FT makes in F glass bottoms. Coordinates are correct BUT you must take the FIRST entry on the right into the desert after the wash. There is a "Do not enter when flooded" sign before that wash. That right is about 1/2 mile from the intersection of 95 and 53rd St.

Unfortunately, this means we will miss the Quartzsite gathering this year. The constant rain and freezing weather have also dampened our preparation for the trip.

We were really looking for some warm weather and good company but will look forward to some photos. Have a great time.

No prob. The truck wins out. Easy lift. 18 1/2 ton crane and slings.

Rip the shed off and lift it out ! ! !  -OR- clean a way out and try to air

the tires or get dollies, roll out, load and and run for sunny California !

No prob. The truck wins out. Easy lift. 18 1/2 ton crane and slings.

Rip the shed off and lift it out ! ! !  -OR- clean a way out and try to air

the tires or get dollies, roll out, load and and run for sunny California !

Nice find, congrats,

Carter-
I'm in sunny California and it is only 2 miles away. Will use my Jeep to pull it out where a flatbed can load it. The reason it interferes with Quartzite, it is going to rain here until Tue. and there is mud to deal with. No chance for air in the tires sitting about 30 years.

Having to make a tough choice. Go to the lemon gathering on the 25th. or stay and get a free truck if I can move it. Really don't need more projects but this one is calling me. Pics below. It is an old International delivery truck of unknown year at this time. Anybody got a guess?

Art,

50 degrees, partly cloudy, breezy, a few showers in the area but not raining at the Gathering site.  The ground is dry - no worries.  Possible chance of rain tomorrow and Saturday, so the sooner you get here and settled in, the better.  Plenty of prime parking spots left!

Had hell of a time getting away from my live-in project trailer, but after getting away from our home base after a day of wire management in the coache's engine compartment (some zip ties had failed and the exhaust manifold was barbecuing wires running to connector on the dash a/c compressor) we got away from our home base well after midnight and arrived at Palm Springs at 3am this morning. We are going to recuperate and sit out the rain and head to the UnRally on Saturday. The rain has been kicking my butt on my trailer reroof project, but I discovered that I can reliably create rain just by working on the roof. At any rate we are looking forward to meeting new people and reconnecting with those who have crossed our path.

Interesting!  Roland discovered today that he can make the rain STOP by climbing up on his roof and un-tilting his solar panels!

If you have any questions, he will explain his technique to you when you get here.

And please, DON"T bring any rain with you!

If it were me, 58 to 395 to 15 to 10 to Quartzite. Others might suggest 58 to 14 to 138 to 15 to 10. I don't like 138 myself

Coming from N. Cal we take 58 to Barstow and then to avoid the S. Cal scene altogether, we usually take 40 across, drop down to get supplies in Lake Havasu and then to Q. This has the least traffic. Faster would be from Barstow to Yucca valley and then 62 across with a faster still route going down to 10 and direct to Q.

If you are really in a hurry, turn down 395 at Kramer Junction to 15 to 10. Lots of choices from Bakersfield.

Nice video Chuck, is that what it looks like now at Q ? Sure changed since we left.

Well last night was one for the books as the wind and rain hit us good. looked at the radar and Tuscon and Nogales right in the the heart of storm. Woke up at 3 am and got dressed as I figured we were going to be battered. 2 hrs later I managed to get asleep on couch as wind had dropped. Felt sorry for the poor Mexicans in their "homes" as many at Border on south side are just bits and pieces. Will see soon as we go over Border, but all is quieter now and hope it stays that way.

YES!  WE are enjoying (finally) a clear blue sky and a blinding sunrise.  A bit windy, but I'm sure not gonna complain - I'll take it!

Last night we had intermittent rain of variable intensity, but nothing scary.  I.e. I did not think it necessary to jack the coach up on the air bags.  8)

Not sure how long this clearing will last, so we will enjoy it while we can.

Hey Don & Tys - you better haul your .....  selves over here NOW!

No mud here - no DIRT here - in this part of the AZ desert, you have your choice of very fine rocks (sand), medium sized rocks (gravel), or large rocks.  It rained big time last night, but all the water soaked right into the sand and gravel.  No Problem!  ^.^d

Well here we are in SUNNY San Carlos Mexico.  last night was bad but no damage.
Took off for Mexico and snow on hills and cold. Wind was very strong and it lashed rain all way to Hermosillo. Ruth did not like it but one thing that is changing right now on Hwy 15 is 4 lanes plus emergency one in 12" concrete going in. Beautifully smooth but had to change over to old one a few times, but no biggie. Theyare spending megga pesos on highways I am told and it is good surfaces too.. Blue skies all around and steaks on the Barbie tonight we are told.  Nice to be back in Mexico with friends here as well as Q.
One thing that ticks me off is my VMSpc stopped working about 200 kms from end of trip and even restarting computer and program did nothing. All the gauges show up but no readings???? Roger, where are you? I will take a look in am to see if Jib is even working so will welcome any suggestions on a fix if possible.
Have fun guys and Girls.

Good Morning John,  we are at Rudy's in Baytown for a visit.

When you get used to having the VMSpc running you feel very vulnerable when it is not.  It is not the end of the world, there are always the OEM gauges.

These things get lost once in a while.  Make sure your engine is set right. From the VMSpc menu at the top select Advanced and then Engine Type then select your engine from the list. M11(450 hp) for example.

It is common to have a plug into the data port that is loose. Make sure it is plugged in squarely.  If yours is loose let me know and I will send you one of my micro bungee cords to hold it in place.

When the data cable is plugged into the data port and into the jib there should be two lights on the side if the JIB near the plug.

From the Advance Menu select Communications.  Be sure you select JS501 USB for the model. What does the status say?  If you are having a communications issue it will tell you there.  You can scan for JIB connections, what it finds should match the port shown at the top, usually port 3 or 4.

Let me know what happens.

Roger

Thanks Roger, I will check all that info on Monday as we have a pretty hectic day today cleaning up coach and car from all the rain etc.
Dinner date etc and  many people to see here.
I also have a second  Laptop with VMS on so my first thing to do is connect that up and see if it works. If so then it is Netbook issue and if not we work backwoods I guess.
Anyway will let you know, thanks. I really miss it and funny I forgot to look at Allison pad to see which gear I was in as so used to looking at screen. Funny too as I did notice at one point that the HWH pad was lit up all green ( lights not screen) I have never seen that as usually only the travel one is green but to have all diodes lit at same time and green was weird. I am wondering if the massive rains we drove thru may be culprit so hope this nice warm dry air may help fix it.
Later.
JohnH
Roger, I did just look under JIB and there as a green light on and a red (flashing) one on so I guess that is correct, ??

well I just tried the VMS and now it is working so I guess all that torrential rain etc we drove thru finally got to the brains of ECM and diagnostic port wiring (or something). Test will be in 6 weeks or so on drive back.
Seems funny that it would be susceptable to moisture but this is only thought I have.

Pierce, funny you should ask that as they waved us thru the tolls the day we travelled as there was a protest happening because of the rise in gas prices. They took over the tolls and all they wanted was for us to Blow the Hadleys- which I did and everyone cheered.
Usual tolls to here are about  300 pesos with a tow car on. The new road going in from hermosillo to S Carlos is unbelievable- wide and smooth concrete and I believe that all thru mexico they are starting to upgrade the toll rds that have not been done.
Beautiful weather right now but have been busy rebuilding an Aquahot replacing pumps and a service.

We drove to PV to get married and the toll booth operators were on strike so we got waved through also. There are a couple of places where the fence has been removed and the big rigs go though and then around the booth. Takes a little time but...

300 pesos is only a trace over $14 now. If you have money in Mexico, the latest downturn in the Peso really hurts. Don't ask me how I know >:(

Yes they are hurting down here with the gas prices that is why they are fighting it but seems the govt has been subsidizing it for years and now are pulling back on that, hence the price increase.
I will be ordering Air bags and replacing them while down here and in am will go to local truck parts to see if they can get them and at what price. If not will have then sent to Tucson and Marcell ( friend) will pick them up and bring back for me in couple weeks.
Did a complete service on his A Hot today and changed over 2 pumps on unit as they had seized after only 3 yrs. Now I know why I do not want one of them, up front cost and parts. At least save the labour costs. We also installed the Apple TV  thing for his smart TV.

We're taking off this morning, and heading for the coast.  Relatives in Ventura have a spot for us in front of their house.  Spend a few days there, then swing back through Q on our return leg to TX.  Will stop here for the night and see who remains at the Gathering spot (the HARDCORE group).

Hi Chuck,
Don't know how familiar you are with L.A. traffic. The fastest way from your location would be the 10 to the 57 to the 210 then straight west to Ventura.

Sorry - the above notes arrived after we departed.  Thanks, and sorry we missed those we didn't say "Hi" to.  I blame the weather for our lack of civility and missing some campfires.  We'll be back through there again in a week, if anyone is still around.

Thanx craneman - we made it to Ventura in one piece - traffic wasn't too bad.  (But I wouldn't want to deal with it on a daily basis).

Biggest thing I hate about driving in Cali (with a towd) is the 55 mph speed limit.  I cheated a bit...

Yesterday  morning , I pulled into the gathering area at Quartzsite . drove my truck hauling  a bucket full of  two inch bird houses on a wire mounted stem to a wood base  and my Maverick . Gave a bird house to each Foretravel  owner that I could . The count was 18 . I have great pleasure making them and hope each one is enjoyed . If I get in a hurry , I can make two per hour , but being old and retired that just doesn't happen .  It is a fun thing with satisfaction being the results . Enjoy every body .      Brad Metzger

Hi Chuck,

Thank you for your reply.

We are looking for a rig with a slide or two so probably looking at units from 02 to 05. U295's and U320's.  At least for now.  As you know there aren't many to see in person so any chance we get we take it. Tried to make it out last weekend but the rain ruined our trip.

Thank you again for responding. We have to sell our Wanderlodge first but trying to get something done by May.

Drive safely.

We will keep looking.

Kent & Peggy Speers & Dori & I are in Organ Pipe Cactus National Park. Four Foretravels rolled in last night. Twig, Roland & Carman, Larry, & Rick! We had a Pourtravel meet up at Kent's coach with a propane campfire (only kind allowed here) where many lies where told. This morning we followed the group down to Puerto Peñasco. While they were setting up we drove down the beach to the Wrecked Reef for lunch on the beach. Many fried shrimp, fish & jalapeño poppers were consumed. Came back and sat around Twig's coach just like at Q. :) Before we left Twig took us to the Fish Market and we picked up 3lbs of Rocky Point shrimp. Made it back across the border with barely a question asked. Kent & I are headed to Tucson tomorrow for February & March. We have plans for many shrimp dishes. :)

This has been one of my best years Foretraveling yet!

In fact several of us hooked up again at Organ Pipe and we followed Twig, Rick, Larry and Roland and Carmen into Puerto Penasco, Mexico yesterday, oh and Sampson. They stayed but  we left and went back to the US. We're now back in Tucson for the next two months. Maybe Mexico next year.

Last morning at Q.

The two full-time parking lot attendants, Leroy and Jethro, bid us a fond farewell.  Leroy, the younger of the two, is very friendly but as Mike Leary cautions, do not let him give you a hug.  Jethro, the crusty elder (hiding behind the bush), lost his left arm in a shootout while serving as a scout for the Border Patrol.  He was renowned for his ability to infiltrate bandit camps using his natural camouflage skills.

We'll see ya'll next year!  8)

My story this winter is similar, this would have been the 12th year going south, but wife has health issues, so not going south this year.
My 96 U320 is build 4943, so was still on the assembly line when yours was being built.

Susie and I are at Palm Springs ( 3-6-17 ) and just wondering if there is still a " Lemon Gathering " at Quartsite. We are headed to Yuma area. We expect to be around for 2 or 3 weeks.
We saw way more MHs heading north while we were driving south thru the Golden state so perhaps the "fun" is over for the Quartsite thing.  My mother who came down here for 10+ years said that folks head out as the weather warms because the animals (snakes) start coming out.

It's our first time down to Arizona with the GV so we would love to hook up with some like minded Foretravel owners.

:o  Been working in the desert for 3 decades...  Rattlesnakes are a part of the environment.  When it is hot, they like to hang out in shady spots, like around the tires and under your vehicle.  If you keep your eyes open, and don't go reaching into dark places without looking first, then they're not a problem.  They just want to be left alone to do their thing - not unlike us humans.

Unless they are very young, it's difficult to provoke them enough to strike. I've had tall boots on and put my foot up to their nose and they always just took off.

Sure wish Q was in March or April with warmer weather, longer days. Vernal equinox would be about perfect with the sun higher in the sky. Getting to Q can be difficult for members living in areas with a hard winter. Water in Mexico is too cold to swim until later and we've had a lot of cool days in Puerto Peñasco after leaving Q. RV shows are non stop in Sacramento and Reno so not a factor for us. We just enjoy the company of Foreforum members in the desert. I can see how members like John, who winter south of the border love stopping in Q on the way south in late January. Not trying to put Canada on the list. :D

Just my thought.

Last year I stopped at the Lemon Rally site in late March early April no one was in the area as I am certain that no one is there now. We are in Yuma currently as I am waiting to have some dental work done, Scott and Carol are in the Foothills in Yuma. So if you head out this way there may still be some FoFums around Yuma when you get here. But there is the 2018 Lemon rally coming up in January.
