Title: Calling all cars!
Post by: dke1955 on September 14, 2016, 01:13:35 pm
Coach is at MOT for warranty work. Front a/c compressor is out so MOT having to order new unit.  However I just learned the unit is on backorder from manu. until October.  HAVE to attend wedding Oct.1 in the coach...wife will be horribly disappointed if we cannot take the coach (for now backorder situation is my secret). SO I am hoping some of you may have recommendations for where to possibly locate an a/c unit.  Eric at MOT gave me the following info., Dometic Penquin part # 651816CXX1C0 (zero not an OH).  If anyone has an idea I would truly appreciate a post.  Thanks everyone have a good day!

What is the cost delta between replacing the compressor and a whole new upper unit?

Check PPL for pricing-- just down the road in Houston.

Depending on outside temps, one AC unit may work just fine.

Agree it would probably be better even if slightly more expensive to swap the entire AC out for new. All too often a grenaded compressor means debris in the system and potential issues down the line. Also your nice hermetically sealed system will no longer be, increasing the chances of leaks. Id bet you can get a whole replacement AC in a matter of hours/days.

X2.....We've been there, and replaced the unit. I hate to say it, but depending on the usage, the other AC may be at the end of the road, as well. My feeling was, as long as the crew was on the roof (a good shop will have a forklift) mite as well replace both; you're then under warranty and  will have no worries. Yes, I KNOW the CBs are going to flow, but hey, we're all filthy rich, right?  ^.^d

Question: Are those the original ACs?  I know ours were replaced in 2011, and our previous coach had  about the same life when we replaced them.

Given the cost of my extended 2yr. warranty coupled with the fact replacement of the entire unit has been approved by the warranty company my choice would be to have a new unit installed.  Since creating this post earlier this afternoon I have been on the phone and the computer trying to locate a replacement unit.  My concern is getting the correct unit.  Even after looking at the units found by those kind enough to post here I am unsure if they are "the one".  I have a 5 button thermostat which is supposedly compatible with a 10 button ac/heat pump unit, and this is the rub...I don't know how to find out if the units avail. on the net are exactly what I need.  Trying to find a dometic phone # is ridiculous....their posted phone # of 1-800-544-4881 speaks only of refrig. recalls and where to find dealer...and the dealer info is a computer generated voice giving address only NO phone #...just fries my cork. Anyway I continue the hunt for information. Thanks to all those who replied...the help you receive here is just outstanding!
Have a blessed day.

Just did return from replacing both AC's (15k w/heat pump at Crapping World,
$1302.79 each plus "dumb'd down circuit boards to make compatible with 5 button thermostat. (did not want  them to run new wires on top of the roof for a 10 button thermostat.... )
Dometic #652826.CXX10

Good luck

When ours went out on a trip to Colorado, a repair center in Albuquerque found two new units in stock at Central Trailer Supply.  You may wish to check with them, if you can stand the shipping. Just a thought.

That is a fair price, buy 2 and won't have to worry about the "other one" going south on ya..and can get them delivered in a short while
Really noticed the difference in performance between the one that was still working (I thought) and it's replacement

You have ducted air, drive away and enjoy the wedding.  This is not an item to keep you grounded.
Using the roof air for heat is never a good idea, so why replace with a heat pump, just buy a regular air conditioner.
Heat needs to go up, not down.  Only an air conditioner can cool, but there are many things that heat, like furnace, small space heaters, so why wear out a roof air to make heat.

Thanks to all who responded here...as always...and I truly mean ALWAYS..a tremendous group of people.  I took all recommendations mentioned herein and texted all the different purchase options to MOT. Bottom line I will have a new unit by next Tuesday which is a far cry from what I was orig. told.  A very happy ending, and a happy wife (thank goodness!)
It's great when a plan comes together!
Be safe everyone!
