Title: Magnum MS 2812 installation in 1995 U300
Post by: Jon H on October 03, 2016, 05:17:12 pm
Just purchased a Magnum MS 2812 inverter / charger to replace the Heart Freedom 25 in my coach. Also purchased the Magnum Advanced Remote Control panel. Included with the MS 2812 was the Battery Temperature Sensor which regulates battery charge rate based on battery temperature.  The battery temp sensor connections are (1) at the coach batteries (drivers side behind rear axle) and (2) at the advanced remote control panel ( above passenger side entrance door).  My question, to those who have gone before, is how to route the battery temp sensor cable between these two points  ??  Would appreciate any guidance to simplify this installation.

Thanks in advance, as usual :-)

Jon

Jon,

The temp sensor is actually connected to a dedicated port on the inverter itself.  You don't need to run it all the way to your ARC panel.  If your batteries are close to your inverter it should be an easy run.

If you have the Magnum BMK (Battery Monitor Kit) or the AGS (Auto Generator Start), they also connect to the inverter, not the ARC

If I recall correctly, I think I was able to use the existing cable from the old Heart inverter for the ARC to Magnum inverter connection.  If not, it's a standard phone cord that you may be able to pull by attaching to the old one.

Maybe so.  Either way, probably easier to put new terminations on the wire than running new.

Cat 5 or rj11, I think the Heart wire is the same as the magnum.

Rj11 or Rj45 connectors are surprisingly easy to install:

Thanks to all who have contributed. The cable run from the coach batteries to the inverter/charger ought to be a breeze in comparison to the ARC panel.

Love this forum :-)  :-)

Reuse the Heart RJ-11 telephone-type cable & connectors for the Magnum control panel.  Plug n Play...

In my research of various replacements (Magnum, Outback, Victron) one huge selling point of Magnum was the ability to reuse the control wiring and it also mounts in the same footprint as the old heart. I dont believe Victron or Outback can use the old wiring, they both require cat5/rj-45.

So many are saying you need new wire or connectors for the magnum. Can anyone who had installed one verify it will work with the oem rj-11 and phone cord already installed in 1990s foretravels?

I did install a Magnum 2812 as a replacement for the Heart on my '97 U295.  The confusion in previous posts was whether or not it was Cat 5 or phone wire.  There is no doubt that the existing wiring worked.  I think everyone agreed on that point.

Just installed a Magnum, used the old Heart cable with no problems, another feature I like on the Magnum (we have the BMK and ARC) is when you install, remove or test a 12 volt device you can monitor the amp draw, very useful.

John, I must have missed the amp draw monitoring in my Magnum 2812 manual.  I have repeatedly looked for it to no avail.

Can you please tell me how to do that?

Assume you have the BMK monitor, hit the meter button on the ARC panel, rotate the select knob to 05 BMK meters, press the select
knob and the screen will go to BMK ready, turn the knob to select what you want to see.
