The VDO speedometer and odometer on this rig quit right after I bought it. I was just about to order another when something occurred to me. When I turn the ignition key on, the speedo needle does its usual sweep up and down. Would this indicate that the speedo itself is good and that it's actually the other end that's the problem? Thanks.

Yes. I think you got a Coach like our's: "it was time for failure after the sale". No one seems to like them, (too expensive?). I replaced all my gauges and sensors with ISSPRO.com - Quality Gauges, Tachometers, Speedometers and more! (http://www.isspro.com)
Jor,
I can't speak to the issue, but write down the mileage at which the odometer quit and try and keep track of how many miles you travel before you install the new one.
I read somewhere that some newer digital odometers allow you to set the mileage to a specific number when you install them.
In some states if the current title does not list the unit as "exempt" from mileage, then the next owner will need to state that the odometer has been replaced and provide an estimate of the mileage.

I don't know what year it started but on my '99 the VMSpc gives the actual mileage and engine hours. I bought my new speedometer on-line and it was set at zero. I put it in and changed all the fuel lines, filters, belts, hoses and fluids. I would show the actual mileage to a buyer if I ever sell, but I have an easy record for my future maintenance.
Mike,
That was sort of my point - legally and correctly setting the odometer.

John, Spedo uses 12-volt ignition power to boot up which causes the sweep. MPH is from a different wire that carries 'pulses'. Assume pulse is generated from Allison ECU, and if there is a bad wire connection at either end there will not be any MPH reading. Our tachometer pulse is from a magnetic pickup located on the engine bell housing, which is visible by looking down at the end of the transmission that bolts to the engine. We have seen our Tach pickup wire loose, which caused irratic RPM readings.
Jor post a pic of the speedometer.
