I'm having trouble locating someone that sells the Robertson screws that are so common in our rigs. I got some a few years ago at Fastenal but they haven't come through. These are the square drive 1/2" and 3/4" self tapping and regular screws. The size I got last time was 10x16x 1/2" and 3/4". Anyone have a source? Thanks.

I assume Robertson screws are the same as square drives?
I buy a lot of my hardware from McMaster-Carr McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/#tapping-screws/=14q9qw7)
Scroll down on the left to select the square drive style option.

McFeelys is a good source. #8 screws might be a better fit. Pan head or flat head Square drive. If a #8 wver strips out you can go to a #10. Self drilling work well in fiberglass.

You can get similar scews at most hardware stores or Amazon.
A while back my Shipper in our Company asked if I would buy him some Phillips head wood screws for the export crates, he said he had received messages from some of our US customers that they don't like our Robertson screws to be used on the crate lids. I was in our local Canadian Home Depot sometime later and remembered about the screws, I could not find any Phillips head wood screws on the shelf so I asked an Associate for help, he said they are available but this Home Depot only has Robertson. I told him the story and he explained to me that the Canadian Robertson head is a taper but the US design is a straight wall head.

Here is a list of screw drive types.

The Robertson drive is also known as a square. It is not clear that they are actually different. Most of the square drive screws that I use will fit on and stay on an unworn driver bit. It may be that the bits are slightly tapered as well. Square drive bits seem to last longer than phillips bits for example. My FT seems to have a mix of both. So I keep a selection of bit types and lengths on hand.
It is very convenient when the screw fits on the driver and stays there.
Found the Robertson self tapping screws at Ace. They had to order them. They are made by Hillman. The 10x3/4 item number is 71004 and the 1" is 71005. They are $11.50 and $12.50, respectively (box of 100). I also picked up a couple of boxes of the regular, non self tapping screws which, interestingly, are about half that price. I am sure you can find a better deal on these with a little research but Ace sure is handy.

Wow, Geoff.
That explains it! I ran into this just recently. I needed to remove a #2 square drive screw but my driver would not fully seat. It just stripped out the top of the screw socket. I thought the screw was defective, but now I know it was simply designed that way.
Thanks for the enlightenment.

To add further confusion the Japanese Phillips head is different also. So if you own a Japanese vehicle get a set of JIS Phillips head screwdriver s to avoid stripping the heads. JIS is Japanese Industry Standard and the flute angle is different.
And Robertson bits work great in a stripped phillips screw as well
After reading most of the attachments, I find it hard to believe a little screw could cause that much legalese !

Bill, it is a thing that is in the news nearly every day, and many famous couples have gone thru' it as well as everyday people!
Tough trying not to get caught I guess!! 8) 8)
