I use Permatex with teflon.
Thank you for contacting us. We suggest you consider our High Performance Thread Sealant (56521) along with our Surface Prep activator (24163). This product handles pressures up to 10,000 psi. When used in conjunction with our Surface Prep 75% of full cure is reached within 1 hour rather than just under 24 hours. However, even without the use of Surface Prep for you application the product could handle the 250 psi in less than half an hour.

That was from permatex tech department, hope it helps
Not a sealer but brass fittings seal much better than steel, softer brass holds the thread better.
I'm going to check out the Permatex. I'm collecting info for an eventual air bag replacement project. Thanks. Re teflon, I recall reading in previous threads that it has caused problems in our air systems.

Teflon tape would, if not used properly.
This is our choice of (NPT) pipe thread sealer:
Permatex 59235 High Temperature Thread Sealant, 50 ml Tube Price: $10.99
Amazon.com: Permatex 59235 High Temperature Thread Sealant, 50 ml Tube:... (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AAJTYS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Available most auto stores in small 6 ml tube.
Eliminates Teflon tape possible problems, where a small piece could be cut loose from pipe threads. But the tape does have its place.
I did a lot of plumbing and Teflon by itself would some times fail and pipe dope by itself works good but when used with Teflon tape
the fittings or pipe came apart much better
