Title: Screen replacement
Post by: bbeane on November 09, 2016, 10:42:33 pm
Has anybody replaced the screen in the windows? Looks like one would need to be careful with getting it too tight, the door looks straight forward

We had all our screens replaced this summer. I had them done at Aubuchon's hardware store. They did a great job at a reasonable price. Not something I wanted to tackle.

I don't think you'll have a problem with getting the screen fabric too tight.

Fiberglass screening is cheap enough that you should give DIY a try. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the spline pushed into the groove without cutting the screen material.  I'm sure that a pro can use the roller to embed the spline properly,  but I never could.  I actually use an old Coke bottle opener that has softened edges that I slowly push along while applying pressure.

I did all of mine this year. It wasn't bad. The hardest part is getting the screens out. The fiberglass screen is easy to work with and cheap. You can reuse the spline. I used spring clamps to hold everything stretched in place while putting the screen in. I'm not a pro but I did manage to use the spline roller without damaging the screening. Go for it...
