Title: m11 water pump
Post by: red tractor on November 12, 2016, 06:12:07 pm
I see the engine water pump on our ism450 has started to leak. Has anyone changed their water pump and how difficult is it to change?

Should be a rather straight forward swap out

Beau just replaced mine.

Remove the front of the engine.  Support engine and remove front engine mount.  Then pulleys and plate.  Drain engine coolant.  Remove hoses from the pump. Remove gear drive and release the pump.  Once released, the pump comes straight back and out.

Reverse to install new one.  Boy was that a whole lot easier to write about.

Seems like a job for an experienced wrench turner like you.  You and I are the only 80's foretravel people here as far as I know

In the light of day was able to determine where the leak is and it is not from the weep hole, but from where the pump slides over the tube from the block, so probably a bad o ring, but looks like the pump will have to be taken off. I think I can do it if I was home. It might be hard to do while we are on the road. Will have to see how bad it leaks when the engine is warmed up. I think the cool weather has caused the o ring to shrink. Thanks for the pages Bob that makes it much clearer as to how it comes apart.

Might be a good idea to put a wrench on the water pump bolts and make sure they are properly torqued.  Might be an easy fix if one has backed out.

Unfortunately the bolts are tight but looks like it will have to be taken off to replace the o ring not going to be a lot of fun

Ya, it wasn't a high likelihood check, but I have seen these small/easy fixes work before.

Worth a 2 minute check.

That thought did cross my mind, so will have to think on it a little bit. I was thinking that as soon as the paint work is done I will run it to warm it up and see if maybe the leak will get better as maybe things will swell with the heat. At least I can be hopeful.
