Title: Oil pressure sender
Post by: kb0zke on February 17, 2017, 09:47:18 pm
Anyone know off the top of your head what the part number is for the oil pressure sender for a 1993 DD 6V92TA? I can start checking parts stores next week, but if someone knows the answer already that might save some head scratching.

Related question: am I going to get a face full of oil when I try to change this?

No oil as long it's not running? No oil pressure when you left the shop?

Bruce, it is leaking a bit but does read pressure by sounds of it.

There are two senders: one for the DDEC and the other for the dash gauge.
I don't know the one for the dash gauge, but in 2003 my DDEC sender was replaced due to the air conditioning compressor belt being way too loose and flopping around and wearing into the side of the sender.  It caused intermittent shutdowns on the DDEC.
Invoice shows Detroit Diesel P/N : 23511176  ($128 @ Smith Detroit Diesel in Salt Lake)  see the price is only $21 on Ebay now.

On my engine the DDEC sender is on the front of the engine (so rear of coach) on the lower right.
The dash gauge sender is on the passenger side of engine, on side of block below exhaust manifold, about mid point (front to back).

Dash gauge sender would be a VDO.
I don't know if this is the exact number but mine does look exactly like this: http://www.amazon.com/VDO-360-009D-360009-Pressure-Sender/dp/B00029XEBG

John, I don't think that the one that is leaking looks exactly like that. This one is on the curb side, but pointed almost straight down. There are at least three wires coming from it, but I don't remember for sure if there were only two terminals. Not sure if an a/c belt could get it or not.

Bruce, yes there is oil pressure. Even with the engine off there is oil dripping out. I'm guessing that there is more coming out when the engine is running. What I don't know is if that dripping continues all the time, or once the oil pressure is gone it stops dripping.

David,
At least on my coach there are actually two oil devices on the curb side - right above the starter. Both of these are plumbed into a TEE that is screwed into the block.  One is the VDO sender (2 wires) and the other is actually a switch used for the engine hour meter and transmission computer - it has three wires with two attaching to one terminal and the third wire to the other terminal.  The switch is pointing down somewhat.
I can't help but think these might have been damaged during the engine work.  Strange coincidence otherwise.  Fixing this shouldn't be a big deal at all.

On this post is a discussion of the oil pressure switch.  The switch and VDO sender is added by Foretravel so it's not Detroit specific.
I would think the 4 psi switch should work on your coach as well.

Given the multiple oil leaks I had, I wouldn't want to say whether this was damaged in the repair work or not. I do know that I'm not leaking nearly as much oil as I did two months ago.
