Title: Telescoping Steering column
Post by: John and Stacey on March 12, 2017, 07:56:55 am
Have had a question on my 1997 U295...Does the steering column telescope??  Tilt works fine, but cannot get to telescope.

Push down on the tilt lever?

Oh, I've tried that, given it some good hard pushes and pulls. Lucky thing is thats its in a good position.  Just wanted to check if others telescoped as my other 2 Foretravel's did.

Unscrew the horn button.

The newer steering column has the telescope on the tilt lever.  Old Donaldsons had the top unscrew.

Just stuck I think.  You may need more muscle mass on it.  Should be easy for most rv'ers

Yes, prior coaches had the top screw.  Will give it a little more tug and push.

I can hear the discussion now:

Them:
"YOU BROKE THE STEERING COLUMN!"
"You fiddled around with it until you broke it!"
"How could you break a steering column?"

You:
"I won't be held responsible for faulty engineering"

(Loosely based on scene in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles".  A very funny movie!)

Chuck,
    You left out:

    Them:
"Fool doesn't know how to operate a telescoping steering column"
"Take the coach away from him, NOW!
    "What a dolt"

    Me:
"Why was it broken before I had the chance to break it"
    "Where is my spinach"

    DW:
Leave it alone, that steering wheel you had to update/upgrade and are now tugging on cost us over 3 coach bucks after you fiddled with it"

You forgot the classic "what if that had broken driving down the road? Is this thing safe?"

Duane,
Thank you, DW told me yesterday after I showed her the posts.  That if I messed up that expensive steering wheel she was going shopping and spend a corresponding amount of CB's on jewelry.  If anyone is interested in the full steering wheel story PM me.

97 does have a telescoping column as far as I know  With a smart steering wheel on it.

Not aware of Foretravel not making a telescoping column Diesel since the 80's

Unless you have a Donaldson with the std non smart wheel on it that has the top knob unlock the telescoping.

Maybe stuck up or down?

My 97 U295  has telescoping steering column.  When I move it in or our it takes some work while pushing or pulling on the tilt knob.

Duane, what's this about "my 97", thought that belonged to your son now!
PS: I'm confused, now. Does the steering wheel on what used to be Duane's '97, u320 have a telescoping steering wheel or not?

Its only unsafe if you are holding the steering wheel in your hands and its not connected,
Dont ask me how I know this, F100 I used to own,
