We have found Simple Green 13406 Extreme Aircraft to now be our universal cleaner. It is concentrated and to our surprise we had to reorder today because it is used for so many things.
Cindy is now using it full strength to clean out the gunk in each compartment door latch and the latches end up looking like new.
It does not harm aluminum (regular Simple Green and many other cleaners will harm aluminum) so we decided to get rid of all the other cleaners around here and simplify our choice. BTW, brake cleaner did nothing to clean off the dry gunk.
$17.50 for a gallon.
I bought a couple of gallons of it last year and found it very effective on most everything you want to clean. I also found it very safe for aluminum, plastic, and painted surfaces.
I usually dilute it 1/3 to 2/3 water in a spray bottle for most uses. Good stuff!

Funny that you should post this as I was amazed at how clean your rear door latch mechanism (and door) was when you posted pictures of it the other day.
Does it smell as bad as bad as it did 15 years ago when the details said no more. It really stunk but worked great.
Cindy said it does not smell at all. . .
Details appearantly = DW even after quick edit go figure. Any hoo sound's like they got the odor out and it still works well. I will have to try it again. The original was way more odiference than me, which is pretty bad.
Charlie's soap is also a great product, good for environment and can be used on clothes and other multi purposes. We use both products, however, Charlie's soap is more versatile. It might be worth a try.
I was just using it to clean the aluminum mirror housings and you could smell it for awhile outside even after cleanup. It doesn't smell bad but it does have a smell and it is fairly strong even with a 50-50 mixture with water.
Hi Guys, hope you are doing well. Where do you buy the extreme Simple Green?
Hey Rick how you doing. You can get the simple green extreme at Amazon. May also be able to get it at the Big Box stores.

Simple Green Pro HD (purple color) is more readily available in my area (eg Lowes) and according to the their ad:
"Simple GreenĀ® Pro HD is a readily biodegradable, non-corrosive, and professional grade formula developed for multi-purpose home and DIY applications including: use on floors, walls, appliances, automotive or recreational vehicle cleaning and degreasing, and for pressure washing, parts washing, ultrasonic cleaning, and more. It quickly eliminates tough grease and grime, removes oily stains, and is safe on metal surfaces."
I believe that the pro purple color etches aluminum.
I haven't tried it on aluminum yet, but a little more from their ad says it is for cleaning aluminum among other metals, woods vinyl, etc:
"Use Simple Green Pro HD in a general cleaning dilution on floors, painted surfaces, aluminum, stainless or polished steel, chrome, plastics, vinyl, canvas, cabinets, counters, stove tops, refrigerators, sinks, showers, tile, and more. Use Simple Green Pro HD in a heavier cleaning dilution for engines, wheels, tools, heavy equipment, landscaping equipment, bumpers, grease and oil stains, exteriors of cars, trucks, vans, RVs, and boats; on BBQs, ovens, grills, range hoods and vents, machinery and more."
I'll give it a try as I have aluminum on the crane that doesn't need to be cosmetically perfect. Will post results.
Too hot here to work on the roof, but the slob that "sealed" our roof got stuff all over the rear ladder. Will try the "Goof Off", but keep the SG in mind. ^.^d
