Title: Finally 1st trip. Black tank flush?
Post by: Michaeloh59 on March 28, 2017, 01:24:34 pm
After 3 months of spending the obligatory 10 CB after purchase we are finally on our shakedown cruise to Disney World with one of the brats and the brat's brats. Question: does this thing have a black tank flush or do we just shake and bake the blue stuff down the road? As always appreciate any help.

Congrats on finally getting your coach out of "dry dock"!  Hope your first trip is Happy and Carefree.

As to the black tank, I don't know if you have a tank flush hose fitting.  If you do, it's probably located in the utility bay near the dump valves and the city water hookup.

After reading recommendations on the Forum, we have used the Calgon + Dawn method to treat our tank for the 4 years we've had our coach.  Seems to work - we never notice any disagreeable smells (from the holding tanks).  Here's one thread on the subject:

Calgon plus Dawn for holding tanks - success (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=22668.msg173496#msg173496)

Your's might have one. It would be a clearly labeled hose fitting.

We use the magic mix, 1 gal warm water, 1/4 cup Dawn dish soap and 1/2 cup Calgon Bath Oil Beads (find them at Walmart).  Stir it up and dump down the toilet after emptying the black waste tank.  Add a bio tab if you want. Don't empty the waste tank until it is at least 1/2 full.  It works for us.

Question: does this thing have a black tank flush
My older coach has flush connections in the Sanitary bay for both tanks, so yours probably has that.  I put about 10 gal of water in the black tank after dumping.  Helps to keep down odors.  Doing that I can go several days depending on temperature before having to dump and not putting a chemical in the tank.  I guess at 10 gal, except at the house where I can look at the meter, about 3-4 minutes thru the flush connection. If your black tank gauge is working properly you could use that.

If you have one it probably resembles this one on my 97. On the wet bay panel, it's just a female hose connection.

Well as always I learned some useful Fore knowledge. Thanks all. I don't have a flush, but we'll give the dawn and water shake n bake down the road technique a try.

Our #5132 has no dedicated flush.  Shake the blue stuff and dawn down the road.

You probably have a way to go on the obligatory ten coach bucks.

Tires and airbags and batteries and fuel lines and brake work was 10cb.

What was already done and what have you done?

You may or may not want my list..

This is a long term keeper for us so the cb's will be driven out of the coach.

Buck a mile so,far. 25k miles.

Enjoy the coach,  it's only money....

This black tank flushing concept puzzles me.  On what universe is it legal to hook a municipal water supply up to a sewage storage tank?  Bad, bad idea that accomplishes nothing.  The inside of that black tank is never going to be "clean" no matter how much fresh water you run through it.  Proper management as outlined above makes it totally unnecessary.

I'm with Chuck. After dumping, we just add Dawn and Calgon along with some water. As I mentioned in another post, I had to pull the black tank on our last rig so I took the opportunity to examine it closely. We had never backflushed and that baby looked like new inside. Our current rig has a flush but I can't imagine ever using it.

Remember, we are talking about a sewage storage tank...it's NEVER going to be clean. Been full timing for 17 years and have never put chemicals in either tank except for dish soap or shower soap in gray water and the occasional rust remover through the toilet due to staining from camp ground water. When we've been sitting a long time I run a couple of toilet fulls of water when the black valve is open then move on.
