Title: Xantrex Prosine inverter "out"... In with Victron 3000/120 inverter
Post by: DavidS on April 01, 2017, 09:44:22 pm
So I started the task of removing the Prosine.... Not to hard just time consuming.. Not easy with spine issues but I had a little help putting the parts back in.

Victron 3000/120 inverter
Victron MultiPlus 12 Volt / 3000 VA / 120 Amp Pure Sine Wave Inverter/Charger (http://baymarinesupply.com/chargers-inverters/victron/victron-multiplus-12-volt-3000-va-120-amp-pure-sine-wave-inverter-charger.html)

Gx Color monitor
Victron Color Control GX (http://baymarinesupply.com/chargers-inverters/victron/victron-color-control-gx.html)

Victron 702 Battery monitor
Victron BMV-702 Battery Monitor (http://baymarinesupply.com/victron-bmv-702-battery-monitor.html)

Victron Mppt Control charger 100/50
Victron BlueSolar Charge Controller MPPT 100/50 - 50A at 12/24 Volts (http://baymarinesupply.com/solar-wind/charge-controllers/victron-bluesolar-mppt-100-50-charge-controller.html)

I took pictures of all the connections on the Prosine before I took it apart. I had it out before my help arrived so I had a good start.. wow did it take the rest of the day to drill and run the cables ( I still need 2 more to finish the communication so everything cant talk back and forth).

Allen at Bay Marine Supply was a great help in getting most of what I needed, I will contact him on monday for the rest of the supplies. I wanted everything to be one brand if possible so it all worked together easily. I have it mostly done but not complete. Ran into an issue with the color display. I plug it in and all it wants to do is blink (not sure why).

I need to finish the 702 busbar and put everything back together inside the coach. We ran the wires up behind the fridge and up the wall to the cabinet..

I also removed the Power Line Monitor.. it has not worked since I bought the coach and I might send it out and get it fixed or find something else to put in its spot. When I removed the Prosine Monitor I had to cut about a 1/4" out of the hole for the new Color Monitor to fit and it was perfect!! So far so good.

Here is some pics of the start and I will update as I go.

Congrats!  Your going to love the all Victron system.  Yours is identical to mine and I am really enjoying it.  Do install the wifi in the CCGX so you have access to the portal.  Graphs and data are really enlightening.

Straight from the manual.. great feature I must say. an added plus to an upgrade

Automatic and uninterruptible switching
In the event of a supply failure or when the generating set is switched off, the MultiPlus will switch over to inverter operation and take
over the supply of the connected devices. This is done so quickly that operation of computers and other electronic devices is not
disturbed (Uninterruptible Power Supply or UPS functionality). This makes the MultiPlus highly suitable as an emergency power system
in industrial and telecommunication applications.

Also update on the color display blinking.. found the connection to the power was the problem. upgraded fuse and line connection and all is good. It was driving me crazy as to why it was blinking so I pulled it to send back and as I was in the garage I hooked it straight to a 12v source and it worked fine.. a little cut and splice and all is well now..

David you may want to consider 3M tape on those brackets.  I used it and then covered with self leveling and nothing has budged over the last 6,000. AM Solar kit is set up this way and no holes

David, as your panels are big and maybe you will be putting one close to front of coach roof, I would respectfully suggest you do something like I did (even if you bolt those brackets to roof- which I would not do, just use tape and levelling caulk) there will be some upward pressure while driving and I made a deflector that sits a few inches away from leading edge and this is taped to roof. In over 4 yrs not one panel has moved and I have been in over 100f temps with coach at times and I tilt them too.

I am picking up the tape today to give it a shot. I have enough brackets to do the middle of the panel also..I dont want them to move for anything and if I hit a tree I want the tape to stop the motorhome dead in its tracks (or help  :)  )

I was going to borrow your idea and make a z-pan that spans the width of the panel and is taped to the roof and the panels edge all the way across. I think you had a great Idea for the drag or wind tunnel affect that it causes.

Thanks for the suggestions They do not go unappreciated

I considered the victron setup but I wanted long term tested made for sure in USA stuff.

My 17 year guru Rv electric systems buddy said he has never seen a victron setup in his shop so had no guidance.

Victron is extremely well known and well respected in the marine and high end coach world.  If your "guru" hasn't seen it, it's because he hasn't worked on one of these.

Jobs - Victron Energy (https://www.victronenergy.com/information/jobs#)
Several of the 2+ million dollar prevost coach converters have been using victron for years and some others are changing because of the falling quality of the xantrax brand. Victron is a dutch company.

After thinking about the inverter a little more I think I narrowed it down on why I chose it..

I like blue, it's my favorite color!!

Finished up the inside (almost) need to find my caulking gun.. I think my helpers took it with them last time (need to fill a few holes ). Here is a look at what it looks like finished and a glimps at Part 2 of the project.. Also included a pic of a small sideways screwdriver ( I think everyone should have one) made for those tight places a drill will never get in.

Cant find any VHB tape locally .. what product number should I get? Does dicor go on top of it or Caulk ok?

Also on my Victron 702 bus bar.. All of my  negatives to to a single post on the driver side electrical fuse panel.. I took the  negative off the inverter and added the bus bar at that point.. should I separate it at the post at the driver side?

At Amazon

VHB Tape.  You can get other widths, this size seems to fit many applications.
3M VHB Heavy Duty Mounting Tape 5952 Black, 3/4 in x 15 yd 45 mil: Adhesive... (https://amazon.com/gp/product/B0016HM7SE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

And an adhesion promoter

Amazon.com: 3M 4298 Adhesion Promoter, Sponge Applicator 5 Pack (5): Automotive (https://amazon.com/3M-Adhesion-Promoter-Sponge-Applicator/dp/B01G2BHLG6/ref=pd_bxgy_328_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01G2BHLG6&pd_rd_r=J4CYCVVW1N0Z047288J5&pd_rd_w=XS3kE&pd_rd_wg=22Orx&psc=1&refRID=J4CYCVVW1N0Z047288J5)

Use a sealer around each bracket to prevent water from getting under.  I would use 3M 4000 UV sealant.
Amazon.com: 3M 06580 Marine Adhesive/Sealant Fast Cure 4000 UV, White / 1/10... (https://amazon.com/gp/product/B000XBDJWC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I used a short cable from the negative battery post to the shunt and then shunt to the original negative cable.

David, have you got a fastenall near you as they have it. If not then use the 3M moulding tape ( that is used for side body mouldings on cars etc) from a Napa store, and use enough to cover the complete pad. After putting panel on roof then use Dicor sealant to cover completely and about 1" past the  footprint of bracket.

You can get VHB or equivalent at Lowes or Home Depot etc. Dicor is self leveling so on top. Negative is anything that is attached to frame. so you should be okay with the bus bar if it is grounded to the frame, but victron says run it to battery - terminal so you do not read solar, charger input etc, only battery charge and discharge and voltage.
