Title: Boost issue and Cat 3126 parts
Post by: gracerace on April 02, 2017, 10:11:05 pm
Hi All, we are home after 3 months. It was like having our home with us!
I did the search thing, couldn't find what I am looking for on this sight.
Would any one have the part numbers for these 2 items, or even a place to purchase online.

Or has anyone had these issues

1997 U295 300HP Cat 3126

Belt tensioner for hydraulic pump (belt won't stop squeaking with new belt, even with dressing)
Going go try new tensioner
#00317 on tensioner doesn't work as a part #

Waste Gate solenoid  (looks to be vacuum operated)

Silverleaf briefly threw a code a 3 times , along with brief check engine light.Always when cold, then went away.
Code then cleared in SL
Code was 102 01 boost pressure fault
Boost on the way home was 21.7 max, a couple of times it was only 18.1.
My thinking is the waste gate is sticking open partially, or erratically at times
What kind of boost does your stock 3126 Cat see?
Idling was .0...till reve'd up, then 1.5-2.0....I hear 1.3 is more normal idling?
Any help would be great
Thanks in advance
Chris

Use Gates tensioner, different and best in every way.

Chris, I  am  getting a little over 24 lbs of boost I believe.

Two things:

Call the Caterpillar RV Hotline with your engine serial number.  They can tell you how much boost you engine SHOULD make. 877 777-3126.

Check for exhaust leaks which would reduce max boost: head to exhaust manifold, manifold itself and manifold to turbo.  Just look for any signs of soot/black.

Just called hotline (Thank you Brett)  My engine had tested out at the factory with 26lbs boost and 46psi oil pressure.

Do the newer coaches have a pyrometer & boost gauge? I sure miss them on ours!  ???

Have never seen a motorhome that came OE with an EGT gauge/pyrometer. And, unless you change the factory fuel and/or boost specs, no need for one.

Said another way, the factory settings prevent excessively high EGT's.

Newell Coaches with the 8v92 came with a dual pyrometer on the dash, read left and right banks.
Believe early bluebirds had them also .

I can watch boost, among other engine perimeters via the Silverleaf VMS. It's plugged in the engine harness (aftermarket accessory).

I am going to put this here to store in search history

Our 3126 Cat Hydraulic pump belt tensioner :

Dayco # 89408

Gates # 38504

I had a hard time getting the correct #, even with all the numbers on the old Dayco one.
The Dayco old number on the tensioner is : 3922900. That number did not come up when searching, but was in the interchange numbers on the one I bought.
I got a gates on Ebay for $50.00 delivered
Not sure how much they are at Napa, was told they are one of the distributors for Gates tensioners

Chris,

This looks exactly like the tensioner fitted to side radiator U300s. $55 delivered is a real deal. I know Bill Chaplin replaced his. How about a part number on yours Bill?

I googled that number with tensioner on the end and got multiple sources.

I ordered 1 from Grand Tex also, compared to Napa and others, the price was quite a bit cheaper.

Be careful. They all look alike, but there are multiple ones. The tension may be different. This is a Frieghtlinner Cummins one.

And yes, they look totally alike . Went with the Gates, way better looking. Same price

Yup, finally had time to look. Appears to be leaking for sure at manifold to block. You can see it spit raw fuel out when cold. Possibly the turbo to manifold is also leaking.
Going to clean the engine all up, we are going to pull the manifold with the turbo attached, and go through it all. Probably replace the Waste Gate solenoid also.May have manifold re-surfaced

You've got a hot rod CAT, do you have a boost/pyrometer on board?

Just boost, no pyrometer...Boost is in the Silverleaf

Update........ Got her apart. Blown exhaust gasket in 2 places. Also a small leak at the waste gate, but on the discharge side.
Turbo is fine, small side play. Going to see about getting it freshened local. going to send the manifold to my guy, have it surfaced.
We tested the Waste gate solenoid, it was fine. Waste gate is closing good too.
The Cat 800 number was really nice.Found lots out about our engine when it was on the dyno.
Cheers

If the intake and exhaust halves are good consider getting a reman turbo cartridge, would be cheaper then a whole turbo.

Not sure what you mean by side play. If you hold the shaft on both exhaust and intake and try to rock it perpendicular to the shaft it should not have play. But going left to right a little play is normal. They have bushings not bearings. I have rebuilt many as they are not very complicated.

Thanks, minor perpendicular and side to side, very minor,

Update again...
Took the turbo in for freshening. There were cracks around the waste gate valves. Getting a refurbished one from Cat complete with solenoid, waste gate and turbo.
So the code the Silver leaf threw, wasn't lying (low boost) the code said check waste gate solenoid. therefore this would be the same symptom (waste gate slightly open). So it wasn't just the exhaust gasket leak.
Had the manifold resurfaced
Got all the gaskets/bolts coming.
She'll be right now M8's
Cheers

                                                             * UPDATE*
Our Kitty Cat is purring. Picked up at least 2 MPG.  Boost back close to factory spec's.
Did the full service on everything, plus a little detail work on the engine and Gen set.
I have a sickness, if it has an engine, it deserves to be detailed.... I should have polished the turbo..... :D
Engine pic is with turbo pipe still off.

that baldwin, they are worth the price difference.

Thanks for the compliment. I was always told when I was a tech,Baldwins are the best, so I changed them all to Baldwins. I guess everyone has preferences.

Just curious what are the two hoses with banjo fittings that appear to connect to the insanely small tubing that appears to connect to the intake manifold. BTW That engine is cleaner than a dinner plate that I will eat off of. LOL. Oh yeah you you left a rag, below the alternator.

Oh crud, that is why it is so sluggish. That darn rag. LOL...That was in the exhaust tube when I had the Turbo off.
Yup, that is the intake tubes from the charge cooler to the intake. It splits at the charge cooler with a Y hose, then two pipes to the intake. I am sure Cat had a reason for that.
Thanks for the compliment. I hate working on greasy stuff.

I cover the tube with a toque, hard to leave a rag in then. Of course most of you will have to look up what a toque is.
