What is a good paint for the glass fibre roof to seal it up ? For old boats I gave used auto 2 part paint.
I have been pondering the same question. Tonight I scrubbed half of the roof with a scotch bright pad. I had bought some rustoleum marine paint at Menards that says it is recommended for fiberglass. I had painted a small strip of the roof last fall with this paint and it appears to be adhering quite well. There certainly are more expensive roof coating systems out there.
Some of us have had roof paint done in Nac. We particularly appreciated (as did techs who had to access our roof later), the addition of non-skid glass/sand beads to the paint on ours. Something you could add to a DIY project, I expect.
FT and Extreme in Nac. Each has their own preferences. We have had both. Would be hard pressed to say which is better. Only time will tell. 4 years and counting.
I thought about doing it myself then remembered the BOAT.
I think either would do a great job. Call them for a quote. Besides it's an opportunity to visit Nac and visit. ;)
Glass beads are a good idea for traction/safety available at a west marine store. Still have about half a quart of these hanging around on a shelf in the garage.
Thankyou, Love Menards. John Has made ice racing tires for our club .
I will look up the marine rustoleum .
When Xtreme paints your roof it is not intended to seal it up. They will repair any possible flaws before painting it. The purpose of painting a roof is to provide a heat reflective, skid resistant surface that will prevent most of the dribbling down the side of your coach that seems to happen with a gel coat roof.
xtreme painted ours last November. It is great and they did a great job. No more white chalking coming down the sides :-)
Agree that they will make it less slippery but white gelcoat is pretty heat reflective and rain and dew are gonna drip down no
matter what the coating is on top,if somehow you can tell if it's cooler and you actually get less "dribbling" then I stand
corrected.
Something like this two part should give good UV protection and allow a bit of flexing without cracking: Interlux Perfection 2-Part Polyurethane Marine Topside Paint Quarts - Pick... (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Interlux-Perfection-2-Part-Polyurethane-Marine-Topside-Paint-Quarts-Pick-Color-/190791546472?var=490130366352&hash=item2c6c0ff668:m:maetm5F207EYYpA5-c_i8Bg)
Prep work is 95 percent of any paint job. Strip the roof of all the old sealer if you have any, tarp the coach and spray it. Wear a respirator.
Pierce
And save a coach buck or 2!!!!!!!!!
As Pierce says - All in the prep. Lots of hands and knees action. My old body wouldn't be pleased. 😃
Had mine done at eXtreme, about 2x the base price, but had cracks they ground out & repaired, removed the Sat antenna, repaired the ladder mounts. Looks as good as the rest of the coach now !
For two part paints a fresh air breathing supply is really needed if spraying, and brush on or roll/tip is less dangerous, but still nasty stuff with isocyonates. I coated a conversion bus about 6 or 8 years ago and it is still holding up well. The roof is riveted aluminum. I caulked any protrusions, vents, AC, etc. and painted with a brush and roller. I taped the sides, front and rear to prevent runs. The coating produced a flat white surface that is easy to walk on, not at all slippery, but doesn't have the shine of the painted sides of a coach. It tends to show dirt sooner that the sides. The product was called Black Jack Ultra-Roof 1000 white siliconized elastomeric coating. It is a common roofing material from Lowe's Building Supply or similar and a five gallon pail was enough for several coats. I don't remember the price, but seems it was under $100. I haven't checked the price on line. I'll use it again, and might put it on the GV when it needs it.

Several years ago, on our first Foretravel ('99 U320), I had been concerned about off color water streaks on the side of the coach from the roof. There was a thread way back on a product called Bus Kote (Insulating roof paint for buses, recreational vehicles (http://www.hytechsales.com/prod2150.html)), so I ordered some and painted the roof per instructions. It was very easy using a brush & roller but time consuming - had to clean the roof throughly before application.
Turned out great and no more streaks from the roof. It's the same coating used on school busses and works on fiberglass, too. Can't recommend the product enough... plan on applying it to our new-to-us coach in the fall sometime.
From May 7th to the 18th will be having Xtreme do the stress crack @ the fridge vent and the roof on ours... Sorry.... too much month at the end of the $$ to do the headlights.
Yes, that is exactly what I used on my U280 roof . I did one primer and 3 top coats.
Saddlesore ... for the benefit of those asking about fixing holes in the roof, please let us know how Rance fixes any roof defects. Thanks.
Say Hi to all of the nice folks at Xtreme for Susan and me. We spent a month there two years ago and were treated very well.
