Title: Water Pressure Regulators: Hose or Residential styles?
Post by: JohnFitz on April 21, 2017, 10:18:48 pm
I'm considering installing a residential style water pressure regulator permanently in the plumbing of the coach versus continuing to use the common RV style one that is installed on the RV park spigot.  I realize that won't protect the hose from high pressures but on occasion it seems like the hose version seems too restrictive to flow.
Here's the residential style I'm considering: McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/#4946k11/=17as58z)
Versus the RV hose style: Amazon.com: Camco 40055 Brass Water Pressure Regulator: Automotive (http://www.amazon.com/Camco-40055-Brass-Pressure-Regulator/dp/B003BZD08U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492826991&sr=8-1&keywords=water+pressure+regulator)
From those who have done this, is this a worthwhile upgrade?

I used to use the whole house style residential water regulators.  Now I use  the new improved high flow 55psi screw on regulator here: Fixed Regulators: RV Water Filter Store (https://www.rvwaterfilterstore.com/Fixed.htm)

This newly available regulator does flow as well as my older (previous coach) residential style regulator flowed.  Plus the outer plastic ring that slides up and down makes installing/removing from standpipes easy.

I use this one. High flow, no lead, 40-50 psi.  Protect everything in the coach.
Amazon.com: Valterra (A01-1122VP) Lead-Free Water Regulator: Automotive (https://amazon.com/Valterra-A01-1122VP-Lead-Free-Water-Regulator/dp/B003YJJHI0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1492864688&sr=8-5&keywords=rv+water+pressure+regulator)

And a couple of these 90° fittings and a 45° one as well to make connecting to low sources easier.

AHH..third option: A better hose regulator!
I like this option because it will protect the hose too.  Thank you.
I like the RV Water Filter Store:  I have a hose from them and love the quality.

Nice  ^.^d  We like the products RV Water Filter Store sells.

We went through a couple of the Valterra adjustables and no longer recommend them.  Lost the first one when it was stored in the coach over the winter - moisture in the gauge froze and caused a leak.  Kept the next one at home over the winter but it developed a really bad leak last year.

The RV Water Filter Store is a great resource for filters.  Their fixed pressure regulator looks good.  We haven't had any issues with our Valterra fixed pressure high flow regulators.  I don't see any advantages to an adjustable regulator, just potential problems.

Some pressure regulators only work when the water is flowing. The only way to know for sure is to have a pressure gauge somewhere past the regulator.

Sorry for a stupid question but is there any adjustment

to increase the pressure on those brass regulators, like

they sell at Wally World?

Carter, they are fixed (about) output pressure. No adjustment.  40-50 psi is a good pressure for your coach.  Any more just increases risk.

I think "most" water pumps are now 55-60psi.    55 psi shore water pretty safe.

We only used a semi-permanent inside-compartment Watts-type home type, never the small RV restrictor.  Correct on not protecting the hose.
