Title: Steering Gear Box
Post by: Larry Bradley on June 16, 2017, 10:51:26 am
Discovered leak on Sheppard Box at Vent hole.  Purchase Pittman Arm Puller.
My impact is Rated at 750 max torque.  This will not budge retainer.
How big of Impact needed?

I pulled mine off using IR 1/2 cordless impact.  Took it off no issue.

Grease up the puller where the nut rides to reduce friction. Extensions absorb the pulses and reduce overall impact torque, so try to put socket directly on the gun.

When I had mine replaced at Josam in Orlando they had to heat it up with a puller on it and hit it with a sledge and a long bar. It looked like some serious effort to me.

I greased the inside of the Sheppard clam shell puller and then used a 3/4 drive air impact rated at 1000+ft# to remove mine. Use the correct puller.
DO NOT use a impact to re-install. The concussion of a impact wrench could damage the steering box.
I believe 350# torgue when installing
