Title: Smart Wheel Buttons
Post by: Jan & Richard on June 18, 2017, 07:12:19 pm
I think the buttons on the smart steering wheel on my '99 U-320 need to be cleaned.  They often take  a couple of punches to make them work and the horn button does not make good solid contact.  My question is, "Does the rubber cover (in the center of the wheel) just peel up to gain access to the switches."  The rubber on my wheel itself is still supple and I am able to begin the process of pulling it up but before I rip some rubber connector underneath, I thought I would seek the collective wisdom of the forum.

Thanks for any guidance.

The cover is held on to the steering wheel by four torx screws.  If you look on the underside of the steering wheel you will see the screws.

Off the top of my head I can't remember the "T" size torx screw driver needed.

Strongly suggest getting a small can of Deoxit D5 to spray electrical contact surfaces with. Nothing else comes close for cleaning, deoxidizing and maintaining contacts without mechanical abrasion.

All the buttons on our smart wheel function, but are they supposed to be backlit when the headlights are on?

Thank you,

Ok, should I be looking for a blown fuse somewhere? Or is it possible all the bulbs are burned out and I need to take the center off as described earlier in this thread?

Thank you

You have a 97 wheel on a 99.  Non lit up.

The 99's have a different arrangement of the buttons and with a different steering column providing power they light up.
