I went on my trip to Shipshewana, Indiana to get my fridge cooling unit repaired. When I arrived I noticed the right rear wheel heavily soiled. I cleaned it off and chaulked it up to road crime. I returned home in Illinois and observed the same thing on that wheel only. Crawled under and rotor on the inside was clean. Checked the outside of the rotor by feel only and the rotor is gouged from wear. Don't know what is going on. I am at a campground and don't have the tools or the area to work on it. I don't know if there are any Foretravel Service Centers around here. Can I disable the brake till I can find a service center I can trust or till I can return home to Florida?

I would think you can cage it, or at least back it off some so you do not get much braking, but you must remember they are your main brakes for holding you still while parked. One should hold but I would chock the wheels for sure when stopped and try to remember about them in the morning!!.I think the safest bet is to find a truck shop and let them fix it. A pain in the A--- but safe thing to do. It does not have to be a FT shop.

Thanks John H. I just got off the phone with Gary Omel and he told me the same thing. Gary thought the caliper might be stuck. Time to find a reputable truck service center near me.

Slide pins comes to mind. Lots on this forum re those darned things.

Floor the brakes hard. Release. Again, may readjust the slack adjusters or let the pads slide on the pins to not make contact running
Thank you to all that replied. I found tha NAPA has a truck service center website and I found a truck service center near me. We have an appointment for Wednesday morning with Red's Truck Repair in Ottawa, Illinois. Service manager was very friendly and helpful on the phone. We will see how the service is. They have good reviews.

Sounds like could be a leaking seal, getting oil on the wheel.
Peter, I was going by his comment that the rotor on one side is gouged and that would account for the mess on wheel. He did not mention any oily residue which would have been there if a seal had passed oil. My take anyway.

Yes, the rotor is gouged on the street side. Getting it fixed on Wednesday. Is there I need to look for when they do the work? I want to make sure things get done right.

I would say "only if you know as much or more than the people doing it" You do not want to tell thm how to do it if you really are NOT the expert. Nothing wrong in watching if they allow it, and the odd photo for the Forum.

I would take and print off a copy of the 4M brake book and take it with you. If the shop hasn't ever worked on disc brakes look for a shop that works on the local fire trucks as they are more likely to have disc brakes.

These guys do Fleet work and preventative maintenance and specialize in brakes. I told them I had the Meritor rotors and calipers and he right off said that the slides and pins needed to be checked and cleaned. We will download the book for reference. Thanks!

John H. I usually allow people the room to do their job. I just like to observe at the quality of work being done for any issues and make sure nothing is being over looked. I will speak out if something was missed or handled incorrectly. This place looks top notch and shouldn't be a problem. Shop looks very clean and organized which says a lot. You can tell a lot about people by the way they keep their house clean and organized.
