Title: Cummins Engine Parameters
Post by: John Morales on July 07, 2017, 11:38:04 am
Since I am in the shop for brakes, I'm looking to have the shop adjust the idle on our coach from 800 rpm to a lower setting.  Shop owner was recommending around 650 rpm.  The issue is when standing at a light or stopped we need to really make sure we're holding back the coach at light.  The owner asked me if my program had a password.  Does anyone know if it was customary to put a password on the program parameters?  If so, is there a default password?

John,

You might try calling Cummins customer care with those questions.  Give them the engine serial number.  1-800-286-6467

If you don't have (or can't find) the engine serial number, call Foretravel, give them the build number of the coach, and they should be able to give you the serial number.

John,

Are you signed up with Cummins QuickServe Online?  If not, when you find your engine serial number, go to the link below and get signed up.  It's FREE!  Don't know if the answer to your question could be found there, but even if not, it's still a VERY worthwhile reference source.

On our 97 there are buttons under the dash to adjust the idle speed. Black ones.

800 is high

800 rpm is too high. With the larger engine, stop light creeps can be a lot of work plus the parking brake may not hold on an incline with the coach in gear (or even on the flat). The 10.8 Cummins has a lot more torque at 800 rpm than the 8.3.

I agree 800 is high.  We are going to have it adjusted so we don't have to wrestle with it at lights.  The wife will love this adjustment.

The idle was easy to adjust.  He showed me how to set it on the steering wheel.  It's now set to 650rpm.

I thought the buttons on the steering wheel were for idle rpm in neutral. Is there another function for operating rpm?

When I put it in drive it stayed at 650 rpm.  we will double check on that tomorrow.

Curious - was it the same as outlined in this topic Setting low idle (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=17021.0)  ?

Michelle,
Yes it was.
1. Turn coach on.
2. Push set increases RPM, resume decreases the RPM.
3. Push cruise on button locks it in place.
4. Push resume idle will jump to fast idle.
5. Push off on cruise returns to preset idle.
6. Turned coach off and then restarted it was still on preset idle.
7. Pressed on cruise button, then resume and it goes into fast idle mode.
8. Pressed off and it returns to preset idle.
Stays on preset idle when in drive.  I had it at 600 rpm and increased it to 650 rpm.  I felt it was too low.  Works great and I don't have to wrestle with braking.  There should be a procedure out there somewhere that describes this.
