Title: U225 Rear Tires
Post by: Jeff and Deb on July 12, 2017, 10:49:42 pm
Hi everyone, sorry to as a question that has probably been answered may times over but we would like some thoughts on purchasing new rear tires of a 1992 U225 we are in the process of buying.

The current owner has recommended replacing all four rear tires prior to our trip to bring her home. We understand that while Michelin tires are recommended by the factory, they no longer make the 9Rx22.5 size. Any thoughts on the best brands and sizes would be welcomed.

We plan to swing by the FT factory and MoT for some inspections etc. on the way home but want to have the tires replaced prior to leaving our pick up location since it's a good 5-6 hour drive to get to FT/MoT from there.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice

Our 94 - U225 had Toyo's on it when we  bought it.  They 'timed out' at 7 years and we replaced them with Toyo's (9R-22.5) and all seems to be working just fine............~JL~

Yes, several manufacturers still make the 9R22.5.

But, another very close option if you have the 6.75" rims is the Michelin 255/80R22.5.  I know many with the same wheels on the U240 have gone with that option.

We have the 255 Michelins. Very nice tire!  I know what the price is, including force balance, new aluminum valve stems, seal caps, wheel studs (gasp!). It's all moot unless the coach is weighed on all fours. as these newer tires like less pressure. If you are not going to get weighed, "Bubbas Budget Tires" is a good idea!  ^.^d

Let me slightly restate what Mike said:

The 255/80R22.5 will carry the same weight at slightly less air pressure than the 9R.

And, unless you carry a bowling ball collection with you, your U225 can safely be run on either 9R or 255 tires with a reasonable reserve capacity.

please add your coach info to your signature line

More people will chime in - but go to upper right corner of home page, and search "entire forum" using this search argument "9R x 22.5"

it will get you started.

As we say "search is your friend" here at ForeForums.

Thanks everyone. While we have rented several RVs over the years, this will be our first venture into the joys of ownership so we really appreciate the responses, information, and links you all provided.

Best,
Jeff and Deb
