What sort of pump should I get for getting oil samples from my engine? I'd like to have something that will let me pull a sample from either the dipstick hole or the fill hole, rather than try to get a clean sample during an oil change. I looked on amazon.com and what I found looks like it is intended to put something in rather than taking a sample out. I have the sample bottle from Blackstone.
The Femco or Fumoto oil drain plugs make it easy to draw a sample through the oil pan drain. They also make life easier & cleaner when it's time for an oil change.
Or, this vacuum oil drain will pull it through the dipstick. I use it for oil changes on my cars. Works best if the oil is hot and, for a sample, you'd want to clean the tank 1st.
Amazon.com: Air Power America 2000 LiquiVac Oil Changing System for Large... (https://www.amazon.com/America-2000-LiquiVac-Changing-System/dp/B0002AJR8E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1501706970&sr=8-2&keywords=oil+vacuum+drain)
I bought this at HD to fill my tranny.
Arnold Siphon Pump Kit-490-850-0008 - The Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Arnold-Siphon-Pump-Kit-490-850-0008/203051321)
Blackstone sells a really great sampling pump that fits their sample bottles perfectly! Just buy it, its super simple and uses ice maker waterline so you toss the tube each use to prevent sample contamination.
I bought a similar looking pump at Harbor Freight for $5.99 a couple of years ago and changed the oil in the gen set then threw the pump away. Not worth the trouble of cleaning it. Worked OK. Don't think I'd want to change the main engine oil with it.
I am re-using the HD pump both ends come off, easy to run a rag through the tube to clean it. I pumped 34 qts. to fill the tranny.
I use the pump from Blackstone also. Simple and small. Sample bottles screw on with no mess. And like rvtrvlr said, uses ice maker line or the next size up.
Any vet can sell/ give you 2oz syringes , add some clear water line to pull your sample .
Or Tractor Supply and Rural King.
