Title: Cruise Control wont shut down with brake..
Post by: Mike Minegar on August 14, 2017, 01:16:28 pm
Hey everybody...
We have used the coach about 9 times this summer..mostly short excursions but we are setting sail on a 1800 mile jaunt in Sept. Took her about 80 miles down the road this weekend and set cruise control like I have all summer..but when needing to slow down I tapped brake as usual and it would not shut off...I have looked through the search and not sure I can compare apples to apples because I don't know which cruise I have. The brake light system works good...Any idea's from the trusted brains on board here??

The solid green wire coming out of the Cruse control box in the engine compartment goes to the brake light circuit and cancels the unit. If you go to Cruise King on line there is a trouble shooting guide. Good luck!

I have the same issue although we likely have different cruise systems; mine is a King Control. They may work similarly though. When you touch the brake pedal the treadle valve mounted under the brake pedal pushes air to a couple of pressure switches and a relay causes the King Control to terminate cruise. When you press the brake pedal you should have 12 volts to that wire. I am replacing both of these pressure switches as well as the relay and will post if it does the trick. Good luck.

U320 models have a computer and do not use King Control for throttle or cruise control.

Probably have to have Cummins check that.

Have had similar experience with my 2002 U295 when I got it three yrs ago. Problem seemed to midigate over time and usage. I keel my thumb next to the cancel button when I use cruse control, seems to work well for me.

You may have lost the cruise disconnect relay.  On my coach it is R11. You need to get the WTEC interface drawing out and trace voltage in the cruise disconnect circuit.

Is that the Cummins engine computer or a separate computer?

Yes the ECM is mounted on the engine.

Relating to King Control:

All coaches with engine computers use that computer for throttle & cruise control.

Early non-computerized engines like Cummins C8.3 have no computer, and in-fact only have 12volts for engine heater & fuel shutoff, so they are considered mechanical engines.

To get foot throttle control to far-away rear engine, RV manufactures installed an air throttle.

In the 90's Lael King, an RVer and inventor-owner of KingConnect company offered RV manufactures an easier to install solution where the foot throttle was connected to the engine via an electric cable.  This worked very well, but it did not handle cruise control, which was still air controlled.

Later, RV manufactures asked King to incorporate cruise control into the existing electric throttle system and our current configuration was born and very well accepted.

But this new combined throttle and cruise was to be short lived as within several years Cummins introduced the computerized ISC 8.3, which incorporated throttle & cruise.  King had become a big satellite TV antenna manufacturer and was probably no longer interested in supporting existing older King electric throttle-cruise installed coaches.  By about 1999, there was no longer any new business from the 4 or 5 RV manufacturers that had used King Throttle.

King divested by selling the throttle business to a King employee who then started up Cruise King, and has since improved, expanded and now markets new or replacement systems to RV, truck & bus owners.  They have a great web site with diagnostics and information.  With parts and service being available for our older systems, it is nice not to have an orphan system.

Mike,

In your 2001 you will have a cruse that is  controlled through the engine ECM. (no you don't have a King Control system) As a side note the trans. ECM and engine ECM  communicate between each other and control all your engine and trans. operations.

To add to Mike's reply, almost all U320 have M11 or ISM11 Cummins engines, all of which are computer controlled, hence their computer manages throttle and cruise.  King Control was used mostly on C8.3 and only up to about 1998 model years.  Some of these models used something other than King Control.

 Please explain.

The OREDS if memory serves me had bendix cruise controls. M

Of course if you were there and know better I am all ears?

Mike Minegar,
This thread might be useful: Hobbs Tail Light Switch/Cruise Control Issue. (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=19964.msg143780#msg143780)

Although the coach in the thread above is a '95, I think your '01 will have the same two pressure switches.  Should be easy to check to see if they change state (i.e. voltage goes away or appears) when applying brakes. I don't know for sure but maybe one switch is for the tail light and the other for the cruise control.

Mike does not have an ORED he has a 2001 u320 which should be in the cummins computer. If both brake light switches are working would need to have it checked with a computer to see why it does not cancel

Had my mechanic come and look at it yesterday afternoon...he looked up at me and said "this is for Cummins Mike"...they will hook it up to the computer and it will tell them exactly what you need..so I called and have an appt for 4:30 today. I will report back as soon as I know...

Ya feel funny on the phone when you know the cash register started when the call got answered...lol

Mike,

You could call Cummins with your engine serial number.  They can tell you on exactly what position on the ECM to coach wiring the brake signal SHOULD connected.  Might verify signal there before spending big bucks.

Cummins: 800 343-7357

I had posted earlier in this thread that I had the same issue with this 97 270. I replaced both pressure switches and the relay and that solved the problem. It was likely a bad pressure switch. Here's where this stuff is located in a 97: 1st compartment on the driver side.
