Title: dash turn signal indicator on after installing LED turn signal - fault msg?
Post by: Larry Rubin on August 17, 2017, 08:27:54 pm
I replaced the incandescent bulb turn signal on the right side mirror arm with an LED and it works fine - BUT - when the running lights or headlights are turned on, the dash turn signal indicator on the same side lights up steady (not as bright as when the turn signal is used) and the warning chime sounds.  This happens if the turn signal is active or not.

I thought this might be the standard problem of the LED not having enough load to prevent a bulb out fault but the turn signal indicator lights up even after removing the LED and reinstalling the incandescent light.

Anybody know what the turn signal indicator and warning chime means and how to turn them off?

Replace turn signal flasher with a common identical looking flasher electronic unit.

If the turn indicator light comes on without the turn indicator switch being selected I have seen this happen when one of the bulb receptacles was defective or corrodded. Try disconnecting the ground on the receptacle and see if the problem goes away.
On my coach the turn signal annunciator is under the driver's side dash cover. Once you get the cover off it should be easy to locate. You can adjust the sound level or just disconnect it. Be aware that it probably also acts as a low air pressure warning device.

I had switched out all of the rear lights with LED equivalents and all seemed to work fine. In the driveway.
We started out early for a family reunion, and as soon as we got to the first intersection we found we had big trouble. The turn signal warning would sound for a moment, then shut off.  The signal lights went with it. Pulled into a local auto parts store and had to wait for 2 hours for it to open ( I said early start ). We replaced the flasher unit, and all seemed well. That lasted until we were near the Canadian border. Then intermittent blinkers and hazard flashers.
DID get home safely, after buying another flasher unit.
When I bought new LED bulb replacements for the front end, the fellow in the auto parts store said that he'd done the same and had the whole system go wonky. The cure was to replace the "Normal" flasher with an electronic unit...preferably one marked as LED compliant. Steep difference in electrical load (especially with mixed incandescent and LED lights) confuses the system. OK.
All is working very well now. Make very sure that your old ground connections are pulled and cleaned or replaced. The lower system power requirements demand solid grounding, or the whole disaster scenario will begin anew. Very uncool on the highway.

Glad you got it figured out. I know there are some very sketchy Chinese LED products on the market that do not meet SAE standard and can play heck with your lighting system. Good to know a quality electronic flasher fixed your problem.
