My Alarmstat is broken, the electrical part is hanging by its wires, the brass sensor part is still in the block. Note: If I connect the two wires together then the fans stop completely.. The part number is 1002 04880 - 185 degree. Not sure how this works but my guess is by design fans are always on low and kick to high when the Alarmstat threshold is reached? If this is the case - would I be better served/ what would be the detriment to replace this unit with a lower degree switch like a 170 or 175? [Are my fans running on low or high all the time now since there is no actual sensor attached to the engine?]

Ask Ken H. He has done a lot of fan work on his. You must have the horizontal radiator/dual fan model.

187 of them on ebay but finding the exact temp is tougher. Several 150 degree but the next up seems to be 195 degree. Am I correct in thinking the fans are on low until the the alarmstat kicks in? Therefore are my fans running on 'low' all the time since there is no temp to sense so to speak? Kool [ no pun intended] to go with a lower temp Alarmstat? Thanks -Nick
OK, let's look at this.
In an ideal world, the fans would kick to high 5 degrees or so ABOVE thermostat full open temperature. Anything lower just means you are wasting fuel and HP to run the fans on high when the thermostat and fans on low could take care of your heat load.
