Title: Fan not running in rear A/C 99' U270
Post by: Don & Tys on August 20, 2017, 11:50:03 pm
Finally got away from homebase after weeks of 12 to 16 hour days in the heat of SoCal, We made it to Vegas! All working well, except for one thing... The rear A/C fan seems to have quit although I can hear the compressor running or trying to run when you put the mode on cool.  Fan of yours to spin freely by hand, so it is not locked up. Looking for suggestions, or prior experiences from my beloved forum. I  Believe that these are the original penguin ACs with heat pumps. They are of course the low-profile units that originally shipped on our 99!.  By the way, it is currently 98° in Vegas at 8:50 PM!

Do not think 99 270's came with heat pumps. They did have heat strips.  I would replace blower start run capacitor first, if that is not it.        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21JfU3nRMCQ

Thanks for the reply Jim. I should have said that our coach came with the "optional" heatpumps as sold the the original owner. What I meant though was that these A/C's are the ones that came with our coach. I wish they had heat strips instead of heat pumps! But I didn't realize that the fans had start capacitors. I know the compressors do... anyway, I will investigate that option. Any good A/C parts websites where I can find out what part numbers will work?

Dometic Air Conditioner Fan Motor - 9.59 (http://www.adventurerv.net/dometic-air-conditioner-fan-motor-p-31477.html)
These guys have pretty good prices,  I would buy the capacitor first, [less than $20]  if that is not it then you would have to buy the whole motor. Not sure on your unit, but if you can turn it on and spin by hand blower on either evap or condenser side and it starts running then you know it is the capacitor. Happened to me one time and motor came up to speed. I just left it on low all the time till I found a new capacitor. Bear in mind, that if you need a guy to come out and repair it, it is almost always cheaper to just buy an new ac. If you need motor, check tag on motor first, manufacturers sometimes change them even though model is the same.
Heat pump units are just basic ac's with a little bit extra piping and a reversing valve.

If you don't want to wait for a capacitor to be delivered, take the capacitor out and take to a local A/C parts supplier.  They should be able to match it. You will fry with only one A/C in vegas during the summer.

Camping World carries start capacitors.  I believe you have a Camping World store in Vegas.

These guys might have your unit schematic online.            Bryant R.V. Services (http://bryantrv.com/)

Thanks Jim, that is a very useful site! No specific schematic for our A/C but the trouble shooting manual that John posted the link to (thanks John!) is useful. It appears that the fan start capacitor can be a combination unit for compressor and fan or it may have two separate capacitors. I will have to take a look and get the part number before I try to find a replacement. It is raining in Vegas at the moment so I will boot this project down the road... Vegas was just a one night waypoint on the way to Canada, so cooler temps ahead!

Gets much nicer north up I15 past st. George weather wise.

We dry camp a lot at the rest areas across from Zion on I15.

You will see them on all-stays on both sides of the freeway

About 10 miles north of Parowan that has a TA truck stop with a $5 dump site

Don, we had the same experience with our AC, except that it was the front that failed. The fan would't start and I replaced the starting cap, but didn't fix it.
The rear had a vibration and would leak water while running.
Replaced both ACs with the same type and upgraded the thermostat to the CCC2.

Much better now.

Did you get A/C fixed?  Just curious, if we lost one in Vegas my DW would have said call me at Wynns when it's fixed as she got in cab.

Don now has bigger problems than a warm coach.

I am pretty sure it is the capacitor. If I take the grill off and spin it by hand when the A/C is on, the motor starts and runs fine. Just have to find the time and place to pull the cover off and get the part number. Actually not to bad, with one A/C as long as the bed isn't lifted for engine access!

David,
You have to get up there and look at it to see what rating ( capacity) capacitor it uses. Then any motor or electrical parts house should have a replacement capacitor. Power off short all the terminals together with a screwdriver to discharge it before you touch it. Read up on changing a capacitor beforehand.

Dometic Duo Therm RV Air Conditioner Hard Start Capacitor (http://www.rvpartscountry.com/Dometic-Duo-Therm-RV-Air-Conditioner-Hard-Start-Capacitor.html)
Hard start kits do not replace the cap. you have. They just assist in starting. so they are pretty generic and install in parallel with your existing cap.

Are you replacing a run capacitor or trying to add a start assist device?what AC make and model do you have?
