I lost power coming up the mountains west of Roswell, NM. I changed the primary filter and completed the trip ~30 miles. I crawled under to change the secondary filter today and it was a FS1212. On the beamalarm.com website it shows a FS1282. They appear the same only the FS1282 is noticeably shorter. The FS1212 was installed by Cummins Southern Plains about 800 miles ago. I am assuming the FS1282 is just a lower capacity unit. Since that is all I had as a spare I installed it. Does anyone know the difference between the two filters other than capacity?
Steve,
A quick look on the Wix cross reference site suggests that both those filters cross to 14 micron element Wix filters.
That is OK for a PRIMARY but most Cummins engines require a 5 micron SECONDARY element.
I would contact Cummins/Fleetguard to verify the correct SECONDARY filter for your engine.
I went to RV and pulled out the original Foretravel manual. It to says FS1282. Since you say they are both the same Micron, I can only assume the FS1212 is just larger.
Particularly with the water drain and course micron rating, that sure looks like it was designed as a PRIMARY filter.
On this, I would rely on Cummins advice over Foretravel's 12 year old advice.
Seems like Cummins Southern Plains would have installed the correct filter.
Mine is an 03 ism 450 primary wix 533621 30 microns. Secondary wix 533407 5 microns. Primary has screw on bottom plastic piece with drain. Secondary also has drain.
Finally received an email response from Cummins Tech Support. The filter is supposed to be FS1000 or FS1282
