Finally got tired of propping up the bed with a stick. Both of the struts with mounting brackets were present and attached on the bottom bed frame point; however, both struts had ripped out their mounting brackets at the top of the strut. They had been attached to a 5"x 5" x 1/4" piece of plywood on the bottom of the mattress platform.
Using a couple of Simpson Strong-Tie plates (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-Strong-Tie-1-13-16-in-x-5-in-Tie-Plate-TP15/100375260) I reattached the struts.
Simple, strong repair for about $1 plus some random screws I had in my parts drawers.
Mark,
Did you also change the struts? If so what size and force pressure did you buy? Thank you for posting this information.

I kept the struts that were already installed. Here's the information that's printed on each strut cylinder:
SUSPA

135 LBS 231
Two of those on Amazon for $35.00 and free shipping. That's a deal!
I had a problem with the two struts, but at the other end. Reglued the wood strip and added some screws fore and aft of the metal bracket.
