Title: Dual Monitors
Post by: gracerace on October 21, 2017, 01:39:22 pm
What's new,? Separate side and rear camera / monitors. I also have the GPS on the left to look at. Should be fun in LA traffic! Just need to run the in-motion DTV satellite down to an empty input!
Flip of the old select switch, I get tanks or side camera. No longer need to hit reversing button (rear camera and tanks were reversed, side camera is the same)
BTW 10.2 on the screen was because I just turned it on.
Not bad for under $60.00
Cheers Chris

What screens are you using, and how did you mount the one on your dash? I just pulled the old Javalenia screen out of the dash as part of an ongoing issue I have of tearing everything apart just for the sake of doing it. It worked fine, but I didn't like the look or the space it took up behind the dash. Figured if I just tore it out, it would force me to figure out what I was going to replace it with to fill the empty void. Anyhow, would appreciate any info you can share on the screen and how you interfaced to the Javalenia audit controller.

Hi Here is the screen. Have used plenty of these. I just two way taped it to the old screen. If you have taken the old one out, just make a piece of aluminum backing where the old screen was. I am just too lazy to take the old one out. The second one on top of the dash, is just tucked in under the edge of the drink tray. Connection is easy. Just cut the end off the old monitor coax, and butt splice a RCA on the end. Plug it in. Hook the new monitor pos/neg wires to the switch already there. When you look at the camera or tank gauges, it will be reversed. New monitor has reversing button on it. Just push it to correct picture I would change out the camera too. They are cheap. It will be clearer, and in color.Cheap as chips

You will be impressed. Do a search for " RV backup camera" it will jump to $500.00+ dollars. Funny how those two simple letters "RV" increase the price. Same with solar panels too. Cheers Chris

Just curious how the new camera hooked up? On the monitor you say cut the old coax and but splice a rca on. The Ebay pic doesn't look like the monitor has an rca plug on it

It does. Has 2. One male, one female for the 2 different inputs. The plug pictured on ebay, plugs into another harness included, that also has the power hookup wires also

Yes. Works fine.Actually the FT cable is heavier then most the stuff they use now. Either buy adapters, or be cheap like me, cut the ends off, and heat shrink/butt slice RCA's on the ends. Super easy

Our "less than $50 delivered" back up camera and monitor was many times better than the OEM and in color, especially at night. A little study to bring yourself up to speed lets you make decisions that can save a ton over someone who buys from the same Chinese source but add a thousand percent to the price.
Soldering or buying an adapter will allow excellent video to be sent to the front monitor through the factory coax. Some have even gone to high resolution and a remotely movable camera.

I have the camera working with the old monitor so far. It makes the old B&W monitor a lot better but not color, limited field of view or really all that good but I have to do things in small steps.
I was going to pull that plate off the back and mount the camera to it, but that is a total PITA. Neither my arm or my wife's arm will go up in there well enough to unbolt that plate. Whoever put that plate in was tiny and a contortionist.
I guess I could cut the hole bigger then make new plate, but I am just no good at fiberglass work. Not sure how I would seal it back up again. Not that it was all that sealed up anyway.
Anybody have any tricks for unbolting that plate the camera is mouted on?
I may just resort to ordering the housing gracerace had in another post and mounting it outside.

It's a bear. Did my fair share of r&r'in those buggers. I don't think you'll get the angle right in side. best part of having it mounted outside is, you can adjust and re-adjust really easy.

I can't argue with that. The camera I have doesn't have an adjustable mount. Well worth it for $10 but I may try to find another one with some more adjustment built in. I am cutting wedges out of wood at this point. My angle is well above where the old camera was pointed already.
Kind of amazing how much better the $10 camera is than the one it replaced even on the old cruddy B&W monitor.

Put the word RV in front of it, and it's now $300.00! This is the style I use. You can find these for under $20.00 Not saying buy this one, don't know the vendor. I would get rid of the old monitor. You can get these with a 7" monitor & camera for $30.00. Just velcro it over the old monitor.

Gracerace, So if I replace the camera and the monitor I will get a color back view and the tank levels with the flick of the switch just like the stock black and white screen. I realize the tank level screen will still be black and white. I only want 1monitor....... but just curious how did you split the feeds to 2 monitors???

Digging into the dash looks interesting. I figured I would start on the easy end. I have no idea how to get into that dash deep enough to get to the back of that monitor. More reading to come on that one.

Matt. The top of the dash is on two hinges. One over the instruments and a center section. Just lift firmly from the edge nearest the living area. Removing the monitor is tricky, but not difficult. I removed my monitor and held the flat screen with a bowed piece of steel from the back. Do not cut the dash! I am traveling and will post a picture when I get back.

Just found the pictures. The first is looking down from the top showing the bowed steel retainer. If you look you can see the single bolt holding the color monitor. Shim the bolt to adjust the tension. Total expenditures for camera and monitor $28.50.

No, you are going to need a RCA cable to sacrifice. Over the bed there is a cover, and another cover past that one. Open it up and you can see the existing camera. If its like mine the connector to the camera will just pull off.
On mine the cable going to the camera was done the same way you need to do the new one just substitute the RCA cable and the new camera's power cord. That part took less than an hour including finding the RCA cable. There was some pretty nasty black dust in that area. I spent some time with a damp cloth cleaning it up. I am going to get some rubber gasket material to try and seal it up a bit better.

I never would have thought about mounting it that way.
On removing the monitor, I can't seem to find a way behind it to remove the cables by just lifting the dash piece up. Did you just unbolt it and pull it out to gain access to the cables?

Yes, and loosen or remove the dash mounting screws on the side closest to the monitor. Tight fit but works.

Yup, all color except tanks. I took the input from the camera before the Javalina control, hooked it into the monitor 2nd input. The monitors have 2 inputs you can switch with the remote included, or on a button on the front. You'' need to add 12 volt power to it. One or the other, either the camera or tank levels will be reverse picture. You simply push a button on the front of the monitor to reverse it correct. Then again to reverse back when you switch inputs, super simple.

Just cut the cable, lifted it out, spliced the RCA to the old cable, and plugged it in to the new monitor. Tapped into the monitor switch (selector) on the dash to power the new monitor.Took 10 minutes

The monitor I bought has reversed image on input one and normal on input two. I also bypassed the javalina for the camera feed. The camera has four tension tabs that just happened to fit the original camera opening even though the camera is round. Works great and the camera even has infrared lights for night use.

Well the old monitor is out and the new one is in. Waiting on a BNC male to RCA female adapter. Not a female RCA cord in the house to splice onto that cable.
There seems to be a refresh rate issue, there are faint lines moving up the screen constantly on the tank gauges or volt meter. They may have been there before but the monitor was so bad I would not have noticed.
Taking the monitor out wasn't as big a deal as I wanted to make it. Open the dash, pull up the part with the cup holders. Take out the two cigarette lighter plugs (going to replace with USB ports) and the only nut that was at all hard was drivers side bottom. Was able to move the monitor and mount back a little then it just came out pretty much towards the window behind the door.
I took the radio out at the same time. It was old and ready for an update. I remember 8 track players in cars this one at least had a cassette. There was also a multi CD player installed. I have one in my car and never use it. Most everything is on the phone anymore. I will start looking for an update shortly. Pretty sure when I am done all the old AV stuff will be out except the speakers. For now they will get a reprieve.
Used a piece of foam core and a bolt to mount the monitor. There is a slot on the back of the monitor, found a bolt head that was a pretty good fit and used a file to make it fit while leaving it snug. I don't have the nuts back on the old monitor mount and it's all nice and tight. I will put the nuts on tomorrow. Basically its a sandwich of monitor, dash, aluminum mount, foam core cut to fit, held together with a bolt fender washer and wing nut.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. Matt

More then likely, when you unplug from Shore power or if the inverter is off, it will go away. Mine does the same faintly. The adapter is a clean way to do it. Now you can start on the side camera and 2nd monitor Good job Chris

If I do more than 1 camera it will probably be 4 and a way to stitch them together. That won't be a $60 fix.
Man, that would be confusing to drive. That is why I choose two monitors. No time to switch back and forth. But still a lot to watch in traffic. But that would be cool. Chris

If I do more than 1 camera it will probably be 4 and a way to stitch them together. That won't be a $60 fix.
I intend to set-up my screen to have 5 inputs: 1. Rear-view/backup 2. Hitch camera for backing up and connecting to trailers 3. Rear-view/backup from Enclosed Trailer 4. Drivers side view 5. Passenger side view
I've been doing some brief research, but haven't purchased or played around with any of the posted options yet.
Here is one option that may fit your needs as you described:
Another option, but likely not without some troubleshooting and finagling to get things working as intended would be a 4-way split screen like this, there are 7" and 9" models:
Amazon.com: E-KYLIN 9" TFT LCD Quad Split Monitor for Auto Truck CCTV... (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G2DR2WC/ref=sspa_dk_detail_8?pd_rd_i=B019U4ZZMY&pd_rd_wg=Agkcw&pd_rd_r=YX6SR7G9A1SYBSZA27N2&pd_rd_w=MdGWO&th=1)
From one of the reviews, which I've posted below, there are trigger wires for each of the 4 input channels. Similar to what the PAC unit posted above is doing, but all-in-one within the screen. Back-up lights to trigger your rear-view, turn signals to trigger side view cameras, and you could have a toggle switch for the 4th camera.
I just got this monitor today and I thought I would post my initial impressions. For starters, its not a bad little monitor, construction quality is ok, probably on par with most of the consumer stuff coming from the far east these days. Picture image looks to be ok, I have it hooked to a home security camera, so I would say the display does justice to the camera. In other words, its a decent picture, but not even standard TV quality.
I bought this monitor with the intention of using it for an RV where I could have split screen of both sides of the camper as well as the rear view camera on at all times while we roll down the road. It has 4 channels and if you look at the images given, it looks doable. But a couple of problems crop up. The logic for the display modes is screwy. For starters, the display that allows you to have lets say CH1 as the driver side and CH4 as the right and CH3 as the rear which would emulate the views outside relative to looking forward, are not replicated if you go to the split screen vertical mode which puts CH1 on the left and CH 2 on the right. If you go to the triple vertical split screen then its 1-2-3. The instructions are seriously out to lunch, one basic sheet that shows the monitor and nothing much more. There is a menu mode that lets you tweak settings like color, tint and brightness/contrast as well as the ability to reverse the image. Even the seller didn't know about that in a previous answer to a question. There is also an ACC setting that I cant tell what it does, but its a binary step, I.E., it goes 0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, you get the idea. I couldn't tell what it changed if anything and of course there isn't any documentation.
Another issue I hadn't counted on was the level of distortion in some of the split screen modes. The "H" mode is about the worse on the sides. The picture is so stretched vertically that I doubt it would be very usable displaying either side of the camper. Probably the most useful modes are the quad screen or the vertical split for the least distortion. That's probably why they don't show any real images, it would not be pretty.
But all is not lost. Each channel has a trigger wire that will let the monitor automatically switch to that input if it is strobed. So my plan is to leave the display on the rear camera full screen and then tie the trigger lines to the turn signal so that side camera will come on when changing lanes. That will give me a good side view that is not distorted without having to mess with the monitor all the time. I just have to pick out the right cameras that will allow the sensor to be rotated 90 degrees if the base is mounted on the side of the rig.

Think of one picture of your coach from above showing you a lane on either side and 10' front and back. The 360 technology is getting really good at this point.

I understand all of that. I know others will disagree. But I would find this confusing to watch, or look/glance at while driving in heavy traffic. As I mentioned, just having two 7" screen's is confusing enough. But easier then trying to switch back and forth inputs.
I installed the right side camera so I can better watch my blind side in traffic. I don't want it to just come on when I turn on my turn signal. I do this, because in LA, Seattle, or any heavy traffic area, I want to watch my right side, so that in an emergency I can switch lanes safely, at a quick glance. In my humble opinion, this is a case where all those cameras, would be "Too much information" (TMI)
With that said, I like the camera pointed at the hitch. I tow a 22' race car trailer, and have thought about another camera I can switch to, when hooking it up. I do have my rear camera set high, so I can see my towed jeep, but I can also see fairly far behind it.
I do have the capability to reach up, and adjust the camera down, because of the outside mounting. I can easily reach it from the ladder.
Merry Christmas Chris

The easy thing to do here is utilize a single screen (or dual if you so prefer) with manual switched triggers for the desired view on either. Maybe for you, on one screen you have rear view & left side cameras. You can primarily utilize that for left side viewing during travel because lets be real, are you seriously concerned about your jeep ditching you driving down the road? Highly unlikely given your attention to details. You own a Foretravel. You don't forget to latch you hitch or secure your loads.
The second screen can have 2 switched triggers, one for hitch during trailer connection and one for right side during travel.
This setup would be simple with any of the two options posted above and would allow continuous monitoring of the views that really matter with a rear view at the touch of a quick switch to make sure she's still behind you. You could also utilize this cool looking Chinese push button control center with room for expansion for 2 more functions of your desire (lower fog lights, 50" rooftop LED light bar, etc.).

You'd have to figure out the labeling on your own, which should not be difficult at all with all the digital print folks out there these days.

Nice switcher. Thanks for the lead. I actually do have the lower monitor set to backup, and the other set right side (passenger side). The only switching I do, is push the button on one monitor to see the tank readings. On the other monitor, I can switch to our in-motion satellite. Mind you I don't watch TV going down the road, but in rural area's I can glance at something briefly. I can look up at the TV briefly, but found it dangerous.Normally it's just to see what the song title is. We use it mostly for music. If you haven't tried watching your multi monitor while driving, especially in traffic, I personally wouldn't get too crazy. The switcher is cool, but unless it was mounted on the steering wheel, it's still going to be tricky switching inputs. The monitors I am using, both have remotes, I threw them in the cabinet. too much hassle. Love all your good input. Cheers

Well the old monitor is out and the new one is in. Waiting on a BNC male to RCA female adapter.
I need to correct this, the connector I needed was male BNC to Female RCA. Didn't find one of those but found a male BNC to Male RCA and a Female to Female RCA.

Well finally got around to getting this project done. Replaced the monitor and camera. Not as bad as I thought, the old monitor came out easier than I had thought, bought wire adapters do no wire splicing. The back camera had been replaced so the wire back there had already been spliced I just had to splice and solder a rca plug on it. Everything seems to work good but haven't had it out on the road yet.
