Title: Removing the dish?
Post by: Protech Racing on October 30, 2017, 10:28:43 am
Simple or not?  Quick search turns up replacing dish not removing the OE assembly .  I have'nt really looked hard at it yet but have made a deal trading the package for something I can use.
 Thanks MM

Certainly help if we knew what dish you had, and what you wanted to trade for.

Removed many in the past off FT's.Putty knife, and lacquer thinner. Go slow, will ripe the glass up. Clean up, and use white silicone to seal the old holes. Unless you want to gel coat/fiberglass the old holes.
zilonen thinner works even better. Loves and eats the old silicone.
Our coach has the 3dr dish on it. No leaks

We have a roof mount, but will not embrace newer Dish. We left it there (no leaks) and got a DISH tailgater. Works perfect!

Another good choice is to get a sheet of aluminum large enough to cover the dish mounting.  Paint one side white to match the roof. Use a good Polysulfide like 3M4000 and a  couple of screws to attach.  BOMB-PROOF.  Sure beats leaving a large, unused dish in the windflow pattern (noise and aerodynamic drag).

We called the old Daytron dish's FT installed "The dish with the built in service call" They were junk. Then they came out with the flat  dish, even worse. Took off many and put Moto Sats on.
No wonder they went out of business in short order

Took off our old Daytron--made a decent bird bath, with a few additions.

I removed ours.  Yes, it was stuck on real tight.  Yes, in spite of my best efforts, I managed to rip the fiberglass.  Left two holes - big one where the crank stuck through the roof, and small one where the cable entered.  Covered both of them with white painted aluminum plates.  Lots of sealant under plates and around the edges.  No leaks in 3 years - EASY.

Chuck,

That is exactly how I do mine.

Thanks. I have the OE motorised something.  Big dome over the goods.

If it is an 88 model, most likely not good for much, better to remove it and start afresh.

Our holy roof
35 roof holes, after 3 dish's
One Daytron
One winegard
One Trac Star
I filled the holes with kitty hair bondo, then regular bondo
Sanded, primed, painting with krylon White
It is dead nuts to the gel coat, buffs right in
Re-installing Trac Star dome back further, and the new Winegard Traveler forward.
I finished painting the Winegard white today
Trac Star for in-motion standard definition Directv (mostly radio channels)
Winegard for parking HD  Directv Tivo, recorder
Pictures when done

3m4000 is not a polysulfide.

And other thoughts: silcon and fiberglass do not mix.

There are four major classes of bedding compounds/sealants used on a boat.

    Polyurethane-based sealants like 3M 4200 and 5200, SikaFlex 291, 292, 295, 296
    Polysulfide-based sealants like LifeCaulk and 3M 101
    Silicone-based sealants, like Dow 795
Butyl Rubber Glazing tape—this is not butyl rubber caulk
