Title: Losing engine torque. Drive it or tow to shop?
Post by: goldbehen on November 20, 2017, 01:19:44 pm
I was on my way to the shop to fix the exhaust when I started losing torque coinciding with a brief check engine light. I turned around for my storage site since I was a mile from there and 5 hi way miles to the shop. I have VMspc but it wasn't hooked up during these incidents. The last time I had it out, there were brief code flashes but no data codes were registered. Aside from the exhaust detached at the muffler the engine seemed to be running well. I have had several codes on starting showing "invalid data" and one injector metering rail pressure..low pressure code. Maybe coincidental but I've been seeing low amperage on starting. I replaced the starting batteries. We'll see if that fixes that problem.
Among things that could cause this,is there anything that would prevent me from limping to the shop? I'll have VMspc running to see what codes show up.
I realize this may not be answerable from a distance but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Thanks!  Below are the codes I've gotten

I see the word "fuel" many times in your printout.  First thing, I would replace primary and secondary fuel filters.  Might not help, but can't hurt!

Looks like low voltage/batts? I would unhook engine batts, let it reset, then try again

x2 on the primary fuel filter.

I'll add those to the list. Can I drive it to the shop if it's the fuel filters? I'm planning to change oil , flush the radiator, fix exhaust, and now change fuel filters.

Yes, I would drive it to the shop.
I got check engine light and lost power intermittent pulling up hill.  Wrong primary fuel filter installed by Speedco.  Corrected by Cummins dealer.
Also, most of your data in 2017 relates to fuel pressure.

If it will run fast enough to get to the shop, it will not hurt anything.
