Title: Winterizing a 1997 U270
Post by: Super8mm on December 01, 2017, 05:04:54 pm
I have read what my manual says on page 5.3, but it only talks about draining they system.  They do mention a optional method of using a Non-Toxic antifreeze but just says "Follow directions given by manufacturer."

Are they referring to the manufacture of the antifreeze?

If so how many gallons will it take?

I am not sure if I need to use antifreeze because I don't know how well the system will drain.

It will spend the winter south of the Red River.

What might be your option?

Thanks

Basic steps here.  I like to use low pressure air (20-30psi) to blow everything out using the water fill line and an air compressor.  A washing machine and ice makers take some additional steps.  Takes 5-6gal of RV antifreeze and a couple hours the first time.

New to me 2003 U320 to Winterize or NOT (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=29647.msg252360#msg252360)

I use 20 gal of the RV antifreeze, I do not have a hot water tank by-pass.
I need 10 gal. to fill the hot water tank, I also have a full size washing machine and a dishwasher, they both need to run through there cycles to insure the anti freeze has entered all valves.
I dump what I have left in the bath sink, shower, and kitchen drain and toilet.
I remove all water filters ( residential refrigerator, under sink) and disconnect the ice maker line for the refrigerator.
Make sure you drain out the water bay faucet.
I use a 5 gal. bucket that I keep filled with anti-freeze with the intake side of the water pump fitted with a hose that can reach the bottom of the bucket.
I watch Menards for the anti-freeze to go on sale, usually about $2 a gallon.

I live in Chicago so I have to prepare for the worst as far as cold temps. If I stored the RV someplace that the temps would not go below 28 degrees or so, I would not winterize, and then use small cube heaters with plug in 40 degree thermostats in the water bays.

Thanks Lon,  I like the idea about the hose on the water pump.  I see the water heater by pass in the manual I just need to find the size of the fitting.

I wont have shore power where it will be until mid Jan but after I get it home my storage place here I will have power.

I have a 1998 270 and fabricated a bypass connection to winterize the unit. Remove the cover over the hot water tank area to access the connection points.  You can buy a bypass kit on the internet as well..
