Title: What’s my chassis?
Post by: AKATheAlchemist on December 02, 2017, 11:50:00 am
Hello All!

I'm helping a friend and fellow forum member, @ZHammer, work on the brakes for his 1990 29ft GV SBI. It's a front engine Ford 460 on an Oshkosh chassis.

We need a master cylinder rebuild kit, but I can't find that chassis/engine combo on any of the auto parts stores websites.

I learned with my coach that the secret was that I Had a Chevy P-30, which was the magical bit that allows all the auto parts places to find my needed parts.

Any idea what the magical but is I need to find parts for this coach?

Thanks!

It should be on the chassis ID plate below the driver's window or maybe in the glove compartment. This should show the model number.

Because it is on an Oshkosh chassis the id plate might not be of much help. Try a 1990 E-350 Ford for parts.

The craneman has lots of wisdom. Your friend would do well to start up a relationship with the local Sticks and Bricks parts place. The problem with online shopping is you know the cost of everything, but the value of nothing.

That originally started as a John Deere chassis, then Oskosh bought out John Deere for the motorhome chassis. I doubt that an auto parts place will be able to find a listing for parts for that chassis. If you have a good heavy duty brake place with an older parts guy at the counter and you take the master cylinder into him that he may be able to help you finding parts. I don't think looking up Ford parts will help much on this brake system.

See if any of these numbers match. Does it have a Hydrovac system? They have a master cyl. and a slave cyl. The slave cyl. is usually mounted along the frame.

We have a 91 GV on an Oshkosh chassis (bought out by Freightliner) and there just aren't parts available for my chassis thru Freightliner.  Call Freightliner and give them your vin# and see if they may be able to help in your case.  As for me and my rig, we are on our own!!  Have a great day  ----  Fritz
