Oh my, I've been fighting that exact noise for a long time. Let me know what you find.

not sure what it is but its loud and anoying.. kinda like the pressure on the slide is down a litle allowing the train to rattle.. kinda my thoughts

Do a search for slideout pins. Don't know if 03's had them.

Jim, I'm not sure but I think our 2003s have different working parts.

Think you right, when mine close, only hear seal inflating.

Hi Rich,

Oops, you are right...the 2002 only has a chain drive.  Hum.. I'm not sure what the 2003 uses.

02 03 was the switch year. If you have slide pins you need to replace the rubber insets. Put a washer in first.

Jim has build 6206.  He should not have the 02/early 03 train mechanism.

We had that problem once.  It was simply that the mechanism needed greasing.

With the slide in, carefully retract the accordian blind and you can see the mechanism - check for things that might rattle and apply lube to joints.

I was thinking maybe the hydraulic needed more holding pressure or something like that... What kind of lube? The rattle is so bad that it will make your heart skip a beat.. Sounds more like an adjustment than a need for lube but at this point.. we will give it a shot

David - my response was to Jim who complained about a rattle in his 2003.

Your 2002 should have a train mechanism - hopefully Brad Slaughter will see this topic and chime in - he's probably the resident expert on the 2002 slide system.

I read that one already.. it isnt like that.. its like once the slide is in and locked the train loosens up or is not tight which allows the rattle.

Ah - a typo in his post above then, and I got confused between Jim F and Jim C

I have a 2002 U320, made in September 2001 according to the wall plate by the driver's seat
and is chain drive.

I looked at the train this morning.. bottom is tight.. top is loose. Bottom is tight enough that it won't allow it to rattle.. but the top moves slightly so I am thinking the hydraulic pressure can be adjusted to take up the slop ..

When the slide is brought "IN" and the hydraulic is building pressure for the lock pins..as the lock pins are engaging I see the whole top of the slide move inward about a 1/2" (tilt) to lock..

This is where I think the issue is.. it releases the pressure on the top train and allows it to move in motion (or rattle).. IF I can adjust the pressure to pull the top in a little more as it seals shut.. I think that will make the difference..

Try lubing the pin holes at the top first.  When mine was creaking/rattling I gave the top two a good greasing and it went away immediately.

I will give that a try 1st.. but its more like ... if you grabbed the train and shook it up and down violently.. not like a chain with a slight rattle.. something is loose.

I talked to Randy at HWH and explained my observation and my thinking of what is going on.. as usual he has never heard of anything like it lol..(wait till I explain my rear slide bladder)..

He said to check the lock pin to make sure it is not moving ( I just remembered something on that and I will write about it below) and if they are ok .. .adjust the stop nuts on the top (behind the valance) so that the slack is taken care of..

I just remembered when we were in Mexico and the lock pin was leaking we had to remove it to service the O Ring.. I think it has moved... it started making noises after our repair so I am thinking that might be the issue (or part of it.. looks like I have some work to do this weekend).. I feel I am on to something now.. if I can make it work I think this will help Jim for sure and maybe others .

Ok after several phone calls and days waiting for return calls and a massive amount of thinking..lol

Fixed!!

Couple tests I rand that might help the next guy..

Turn HWH system to bypass
put slide out and then put slide in but do not let the lock pins engage (2002 only).. Drive to see if that helped with the rattle

if it did, problem solved as the slide will need adjusted. Mine did not but it did help. HWH asked if the slide had been serviced for any reason.. I told them yes about a year and a half ago.. but noise just started.. I had forgot that when we were in Purto Penasco I had a hydraulic leak on the Lock pin so we removed it to replace the washer seal. After looking into it a little it seemed the slide would shift forward a little to engage the pins.

I was pulling the screws our of the valance to look at the pin alignment and as I was doing that I noticed the wood that has a screw holding the valance to the slide was rotting or dry.. it moved when shook. I added a couple more screws to it and the way it was made I was able to push up on the valance and the whole thing lifted a little so I stuffed a piece of cardboard under it so it rested on the cardboard and not the wood under it.. Noise fixed!!

When I would hit a couple bumps in a row it would vibrate the valance and the 2 pieces of wood would hit each other and cause a violent rattle.. Drove to Q and not 1 rattle after the fix.

Maybe help the next guy.. simple fix for an annoying problem
