Title: Is there an easy way to get into the space under the upper side cabinets.
Post by: Matt Childs on January 29, 2018, 10:04:13 am
There are fluorescent lights under the cabinets over the couch on the drivers side and from the front down the upper cabinets on passenger side that span the living room and kitchen.  There seems to be a 3 or 4 inch space between the floor of the cabinet and the wood that the lights are mounted on.  I would like to find a way to uncover that space so I can mount new lights with something other than self taping screws into that wood on the bottom of the cabinet.

Any ideas?

There was a thread on this issue some time back, but I can't find it. I am sure it will come up.
I figured there would be a post on it but I can't find it either.

If your wall cabinets are similar to the ones in my 2002 the false floor inside the cabinet can be removed. As I remember, I think I had to remove the  rear panel of the cabinet held by Velcro to allow the cabinet floor panel inside to be lifted up.

As far as I can tell the cabinet floor spans multiple cabinet sections but I will look at it again to see if there are separations between the sections.

My 99 has screws in the carpeted cabinet floor. You have to look close they are screwed below the carpet covering once removed you can bull the bottoms out

The inside bases do come out by removing the little black screws that go thru the carpet cover.

You should be able to run your finger around the perimeter of the cabinet floor and feel indentations
in the carpet indicating screw locations.

If you want to remove to inside bottoms you need to pull the back side off, held on with velcro.  In many cases you have to remove an end panel or two.  Find and remove the screws in the carpeted bottom panel, put a small piece of painters tape by each hole so you can find them to replace the screws.  Usually these screws are square head screws, some phillips head.

It takes some patience and some time and a small pry bar.  Each cabinet is similar but not always the same.

There is 3/4" space in the bottom of the cabinets to run wires.

The flourescent fixtures should have four screws inside that hold them in place.  Remove the plastic cover and you will see them.  If you have woden trim around them you do not have to take that off.

If you can't find all the screws in the carpet, use a small magnet to find them
