I cleaned the slip rings and installed new brushes, there was no difference.

New brushes won't affect the running of the machine.  The brushes just pick up the power as it is generated.  The brushes in an alternator  don't wear as like the ones in a generator.  (AC alternator vs DC generator).  Could improve your output  power if there was a lot of corrosion on brushes and slip rings.    Have a great day  ----  Fritz

Brushes wore a grove that could have been costly if not caught and if we had a different tech.
Important to check generator brushes... & have a good Phoenix generator shop. (http://www.foreforums.com/index.php?topic=28746.msg240715#msg240715)

Might consider relocating the generator control box to side compartment, the vibration tends to shake that stuff to failure.  Seems like FT sold a kit for this purpose with a new harness,
