Title: Dometic Model NRD 1282 lost cooling unit leaked.
Post by: Dick & Sue on March 29, 2018, 11:09:06 am
Our Dometic NRD 1282 lost all its cooling ammonia.
Has anyone tried replacing the coolant unit?
Our local RV center stated it's to heavy to do.
Thinking about going to Shipshewana Indiana.
They quote a installed price of $1,385 otd.

We are not interested in installing a residential unit.

Dick

Go tho the search function in the upper right hand corner of the page -

search "entire forum" and put "replace cooling unit" into the search argument - LOTS of threads on the topic including folks who have used the vendor you are asking about

Good hunting and good luck with the repair!

Hi Dick and Sue,

When I had MOT replace the cooling unit on my Dometic NR-1495 in March last year, I had bought the Amish Built unit online from EBay and had it deliver ed to MOT- simply Google your model number. The company was Cooling Unit Warehouse in Shipshewana, IN, phone 260-768-4067. Look at their website: RV Cooling Unit Warehouse (http://www.rvcoolingunit.com). It carries a 3 year warranty with an additional 3 years available. It would seem they offer new and remanufaured units(??). Price I paid was $1025 plus an additional $30-$50 (??) for the two accessory fans unit to mount up behind the cooling unit. It took MOT one whole day to remove and replace the refrigerator cooling unit - not something I wanted to tackle by myself.

I would suggest buy only the Amish unit. It seems everyone I talked to said that is the most reliable manufacturer.

I paid $800 at JC Refridgeration in Shipshewana. It was a great experience and was well worth the drive. Our fridge has been rock solid.

We did have  a problem on our first trip after the installation while we were vacationing in Florida. JC sent a Shipshewana trained tech to our campsite to solve our issue. Great service after the sale.

I had my fridge cooling unit swapped at JC Refrigeration also.  If you didn't want to go to Shipshewanna you can order the unit and swap it out yourself.  It's a 2 man job.  Some on this forum have taken on the job with success, I'm in Illinois so I drove down.  Fridge is going on 2 years and running great.

You suggested buying the Amish Unit but when I looked on their website there was nothing about an Amish Unit!!
I guess I am missing something (Still Newbie)
Thanks for Help and Post

I had my cooling unit replaced at JC Refrigeration in Shipshewana, IN.  They are the factory that makes them and installs them- that was last Labor day, very happy so far.  We boondock so we wanted to stay with the flexibility of the propane/electric unit.  Well worth going to Shipshewana to have it installed, nice area too.

Good luck                        ^.^d

Update.
We are heading to JC Refrigeration in Shipshewana, Ind on our way home the first of May.
Mr. JR quoted us $1025 for a new cooling unit and $400 labor. He said that they go though the whole ref and it'll be like new when they finish with 3 year warranty.
Will report back when we are finished.

There must be something in the air, yesterday a 2001 Winnebago with a Norcool  near us sprang a coolant leak.

Don't forget to ask JR about the extended warranty. It's 3 additional years.
